Isn't that always the way?

I have heard of rubbing white metal with the side of a sewing needle to get that result. Careful of fingers...

Quote from: chrisonord on November 18, 2024, 02:24:48 AMI have just this morning recieved a replacement canopy for the P.1127 from Airfix, any guesses as to what could be wrong with said canopy?
Correct!! It is exactly the same as the original one. Now I know why they didn't answer my question when I asked about them sending me one that would fit.
NICE ONE AIRFIX :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:
Ok, so how would Airfix know that a particular part would fit your particular kit? The same part will have gone out with every P.1127 kit. You asked for a replacement part for the P.1127 and, they sent the appropriate replacement part. Sorry but, I don't see the issue here. The poorly fitting canopy has long been an issue with this kit.  I don't see that Airfix has done anything other than reply to your request in the only way they could.
No, I never said that. I told them that the canopy in the kit doesn't fit, and asked if they had knowledge of the fact, and if they had a revised version of the canopy. Going off other forum members comments on the kit, from current and previous releases, the canopy has always been an issue.
A "revised version" would require a new mould, and if they'd done that, don't ya think it would have been in the box.

BTW the customer service contact people
aren't going to know a damned thing about
technical issues with the kit. They deal with issues relating to sales, missing parts
etc.

I spoke to someone from their technical department, he took s kit out and put tigether the relevant parts, and said to me that he could see what I meant by the bad fit at both the front,  rear and sides of the canopy. But didn't elaborate on whether they were going to do snything about it, just said that it was an old kit. The kit went in the bin.

Hi Chris !  Been a while.

How about using the inside of the canopy to mould a replacement?  Be a bit fiddly for sure, but probably the only way to get something near the correct shape.

Happy new year!

Hello Jay, long time no see, hope you are well my friend, and happy new year to you also.
I don't have the means to do such a task unfortunately, and wouldn't know where to start, the part built kit is currently in thr scrapyard, awaiting its fate.

The old fashioned way would be to :-

1) Place the canopy on some plastic card and draw around the base, then cut out that shape.
2) Pour Plaster of Paris into the canopy, after greasing the inside of it, stick a cocktail stick into the plaster to provide you with a handle.
3) Put some thin, clear plastic sheet over the hole. Make sure the sheet is of greater area than the hole.
3) One the PoP has set remove it and after heating the sheet covering the hole until it's starting to sag, quickly plunge the "master" through the hole.

May take more than a few attempts, but you'll get there in the end.

This method can be used with hand carved balsa canopy masters as well. But you neeed to seal the balsa.

Cheers Chris, I will look into one of those, I am surprised nobody has done a vacform better fitting canopy, even though I don't like vacforms, I have less chance of messing those up.

Chris I suddenly remembered this recent thread on plunge moulding.

The illustrations probably make it a lot clearer than my verbage.

Someone did a vacform canopy for the resin Kestrel kit put out by...............er..................u,, I can't remember but I've got one at home.

It may have been Aeroclub, but they're long defunct sadly, even though Colin's doing his best to resurrect some of John's stuff.

Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Heritage Aviation did the Kestral along with various 1127s

Ah yes, thanks for the reminder. Not sure who did that canopy though, maybe Heritage did that themselves?

There are two canopies in that kit which is no longer available.

It does fit the kit though.

Heritige kit with Heritige canopy.

Heritage kit with Airfix canopy

I only roughly cut out the Heritage canopy that I used for these pictures, the other one is still untouched if someone wants to borrow it to make a buck to mould new ones?

If someone takes Alastair up on his offer, I will be your first customer. I should resurect the p1127, as I have wiffed it, by putting on a mirage 3 recce nose. Yea it looks bizare, but that is the whole point.
