One of my cars just got through its MoT, and it needed a new exhaust system, the car's 18 yrs old, and that cost me more than the whole CAR did originally!  :banghead:  :banghead:

I've heard similar stories and even accounting for inflation it's ridiculous.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I paid out £990 last year to replace the air conditioner pump. When it stopped working it jammed the belt which controls other parts of the engine and HAD to be replaced. It also had to be an official Nissan part as nobody else made this particular pump.

Spark plugs. Nissan Note needs 3 spark plugs. These are £22 each. £66  :o  :-X
I've never paid more than £20 for a box of 4 for any of my other cars - Hyundai, Ford, Vauxhall, Mazda etc

Nowadays spark plugs come with their own coil attached, that's why they're so pricey.

Mine come with all SIX in one lump, I hate to think how much they'll cost when it's time for a new lot!

If I ever change my car again then I will be looking at what car has the cheapest or most reasonably priced parts.

YIKES! Not sure about the regulations over there, but on this side of the pond there is a flourishing business in rebuilt/reconditioned parts. Significantly cheaper.

There is here too, but unless there's enough of a market, LOTS of that type still around, it's not worth anyone doing the re-building.

My club bought the original tooling from Vauxhall's for our cars, so that's OK, and we can make our own, but many other clubs and owners aren't as lucky.

Yeah, that WoF in 2023 cost me north of $2000; new tyres & brakes, plus the frame member under the radiator.
Then the fuel pump control part went and took the loom and pump itself with it - another $900 plus labour.
And it's a Ford, not anything more esoteric...

I'll probably break a self-imposed social position and the next one will be Japanese. Or Korean possibly.

I certainly do, and you'd have thought I'd learnt my lesson the first time.
Or the second.

Mazda 6 estate manual mate ...bloody good cars  ;D
Plenty of them around too and parts are very reasonable price wise .

Looking at what you blokes are talking about what you've payed most of that is just labour charges .
Here it's common to see $130 per hour labour charges so seeing  a grand for a rather simple job is nothing abnormal at all.
Course here if your car is a high end brand ..Mercedes..BMW  and so on ..prices go nuts 🤪
$350per hr plus .
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .

Anyway, back on topic, I received a memory upgrade for my new PC on Sunday. After a bit of faffing around, I completely missed the button labelled Side Panel Relece, I installed the new memory, same brand, model etc as was fitted new, just bigger. So I went from 16GB to 64GB so now I can pursue another hobby of mine, playing Civilization in it's latest guise without any problems with the machine deciding to lock up as it was struggling.

When you think about it, there's no logic for those higher labour prices, all cars are built the same way these days, and if you know how to fix a Peugeot 305, you can fix a BMW M5 too. It's just 'what the market will bear', or in another language, 'Corporate Greed'. :(

If it's a GT40, with highly specialized support staff, yes.  Otherwise, "Found On Road Dead", "F-ing old rebuilt Dodge", etc.
