They were used for training.
This article about modelling a Sherman DD also has info on the Valentine DD. Along with sideview drawings of proposed Churchill and Cromwell DDs.

There's not much freeboard at the bow as it launches down the ramp.  Wouldn't like to do that in rough seas.

The whole idea looks decidedly dicey!

Did they have folding rudders as it steers pretty well but no steering system is visible?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

On the Sherman DDs, either a tiller operated by the TC, or swiveling props operated by the driver
