Pretty pleased with the Lightning, so some attention shift towards the even more neglected Draken. Clarifying the next step for that, however turns out to be a little more complicated than sorting the Lightning, so no real construction today. That said, I've decided that I will have to replace the rear/outer weapon pylons to something inspired from the later J35F in order to better accommodate reasonable missiles, but deciding on exactly which missiles to then use is not as easy. I hope I'll find more clarity once the new pylons are made and fitted.

Trying to resuscitate the mojo inevitably leads to more posts in the forum. I hope you bear with me, even through rants like >THIS< and, worse, >THIS<. However, I find reasoning with myself much more boring than bringing you in on the topics, so I'm taking some liberties here, just trotting on. 

Tomorrow, inspired by my Draken armament mullings, me and the lad (and his unbearable friend) will pop over to >THIS< place, the Swedish missile museum. I just might take the odd shot to post here afterwards.  ;)

I just played the vid of the Draken flight sim flight at6 the missile museum, and it's SUPERB! I'd love to go there and have a go.!  :thumbsup:  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

That J35B simulator is an absolute banger! They run it on DCS, but they've actually taken the effort to make EVERYTHING in the cockpit work in its original form! Every instrument, switch, dial and selector, including things like alpha indicator and stick warning. And engine noise! It's magic!

We had to prioritise flying opportunities though, but I'll admit it was a rather easy choice letting the lad drive. And that he did with flying colours, the simulator leader being rather impressed, even to a degree to take me to one side and complimenting the little buggers flying! "No one lands a Draken in one piece on their first flight. Nor do very many manage to perform a low level strafing run on a moving target without either doing a CFIT or superstall. That guy did both, and a good landing it was too!" 

Next time, I'll go with a mate of mine, not allowing the little sod to see me crash..  :angel:

The first view you get once inside. A German V1 dominating the floor, and over it, a series of anti ship missile developments, from the first, somewhat clumsy attempt from the late 1940's all the way to today's RB15F. On the floor, behind the V1, the first operational antiship missile in the western world - the Rb08. And behind that, the Norwegian Penguin and the first all Swedish attempt towards a shipborne antiship missile, the Rb315.

Upright, the Rb05, the Swedish Bullpup, if you like, and in front of the AJ37 Viggen, the replacement, a Maverick IR guided missile. In front of that, an U22 ECM pod.

On the air-to-air side, first a nice comparison between the Rb24 Sidewinder versions used in the RSwAF and the two Falcons. And to the right, the first Swedish try towards an AAM against the wall. Its looking a bit like that early Matra 511 that the early Mirage III's carried in the beginning.

Here comes something I found quite interesting, though. Two missile projects that didn't go all the way. First a small missile, the Rb340/341. These were short range SARH/IR missiles for the J35D/F and later the Viggen system, but in the end, they lost out to the Falcons.

And next, the Rb372, a short to medium range all aspect IR missile developed for the JA37 Viggen in the late 1970's. It was very, very close to enter service when, much for political reasons, the AIM-9L was chosen instead. Once the new Sidewinders arrived, however, they turned out to be rather worse than the Swedish Rb372 had shown during early trials, but at that time, the deal was done and the Sidewinders bought.

Thanks for those shots, absolutely fascinating. For someone like me who tends to be stuck in the "propellor" era they show me just how big some of these things are. I always think they are smaller.

Not a bad day today as i actually got a bit further on the FrankenDraken J35B. It's now looking almost like a Draken, and there's a photo as well as a somewhat updated backstory in the project thread over in the Aircraft section.

Also mulling on the so far surplus Heller Draken kit, and I might just have an idea for it. I shall review my stash of detail sets first, however.

It most certainly has! And what fun it is!
Thinking a little bit more on that, however, I think I can identify at least three different factors enhancing and maintaining the mojo, namely

  • trigger, in this case the visit to the missile museum
  • time, I.e the opportunity to act on the idea and keeping at it frequently
  • access to material, i.e having the kit and other parts you want to run with easily accessible in your StashTM

The trigger doesn't have to be as fancy as a museum visit. I could as easily have been a lucky Google result or similar, but that said, it does help if you get more information and inspiration than you expected when entering into the triggering activity.

The time resource, in particular the frequent modelling time slots, can be challenging to secure when having to actively perform to secure your livelihood. In my case, time is intermittent, so matching the time resource with the mojo outbursts is, from time to time, tricky

Access to kits shouldn't be an issue given the sheer number in my StashTM(well north of 700 kits :angel:), but annoyingly, rather more often than you would like, the ideas I get does require kits or other stuff that i don't have. And it has on several occasions proven itself that waiting for deliveries can mean losing your mojo. That number of unbuilt kist is a proof, I would say..

All in all, mojo seems a volatile energy form, exploding once you lest expect, consuming everything in its way, but equally suddenly, it can vaporise into oblivion.
