Has anyone had any success with this paint?

I bought a pot of it maybe 9 months ago and have NEVER had it show as anything like 'chrome! No matter how much I mix it, shake it about or anything, it always shows up as a medium silvery grey on the model.

I wanted to use it to highlight landing gear struts etc. but I think I'll go back to my Molotov pens, at least I KNOW they work!

It sucks Kit..it's about as chrome as matt black is ...the one I like is the Mr Hobby super metallic no2 ..it gives pretty good results but it also dries pretty quickly.
I paint it and then go over the top of it with thinners to smooth it out ..really does look good 👍
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .

I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

Magic Phil, I'm glad it's not me, thanks.

Kit its definitely not you on this, the pot ive had has never been any good,  i normally end up using pewter Daler Rowly series 3 tube paint ( Mrs SPs) art supply of)

I use X-11.  And i've never considered the "chrome" part of the name as anything other than that - just part of the name.
It never occurred to me that parts painted with it were supposed to look like they were chrome plated.  Mainly because they don't.
It's a good silver though.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

I've had mixed results with it. I think as with Alclad Chrome, it needs a highly polished gloss black base.

I've recently bough a refill tube of Molotov Liquid Chrome to trial. First opportunity to give it a go should be in a week or so when I do the undercarriage and pitot of a Fairey Delta 2 I'm in the middle of.

I'm a fan of the Molotov pens, but I'm 120 miles away from mine just now. That should change on Weds.

NARSES2

I use my Molotov Liquid Chrome pen for oleo's etc and Humbrol Metalcote Polished Aluminium when I want an overall polished silver look.

I think a lot of Tamiya paints just don't like brushes  :-\
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Oh, I shall try that Chris, as I am looking at making the smoked grey plastic clips for my bathroom mirrors look like chrome, the pens are good but not good enough to cover what I need in one continuous layer.

But can you still get Metalcotes? I haven't seen any for ages now.

I have the odd one or two in the paint stash

Three in fact, Matt Aluminium, Satin Gold and Polished Steel and all three unopened.

Getting a decent metallic silver finish over a broad area has always been a nightmare for me. Plain old Humbrol 11 sometimes works like a dream, sometimes totally naff. Same goes for almost anything else, except the ones that never work. Gloss black undercoat? Works on alternate Thursdays when there is an R in the month. Oil-based "enamel" still shiny after varnishing with acrylic to take/protect the decals? Only when the moon aligns with my dinner plate. Wait a month, and the same pot of paint has utterly changed its look when applied.
Got a whole-body job coming up. Already tried three new brands of dead cert from the local model shops, unanimously dead but there they end. Now, where's my snake blood and spell book? Maybe I should sacrifice the cat, h'mm....
Cheers.

I used to use Halfords Ford Stratos Silver for overall NMF schemes, but it's almost impossible to find it in Halfords' mind bogglingly complex colour code system they have these days.  :banghead:

Plus their paint quality has taken a nose dive too, it's nowhere near as hard wearing as the old stuff was. :(

The Rat

I've got some, and it is slightly brighter than the regular silver. But not worth bothering with. Get one, or the other, but there's no point spending money for both.

One super bright silver I came across was totally by accident..Ammo's steel metallic paint ..it's so bright it could pass for chrome paint  :o
