This is sort of a 'whiff' - what if the A-400M does actually enter service  ;)

Assuming it actually enters service does anybody have any ideas for a name? A-400M does not seem particularly exciting.

Having just finished reading 'Drop Zone Borneo' I propose Argosy, after the AW Argosy, at least for the RAF version.

Hi Everyone!

I just thought that since we're discussing the A400M, that I'd post an illustration.

This illustration is a profile view which also shows a lot of the features and capabilities of this aircraft.

Eurolifter is a distinct possibility IMVHO. However it is a bit like Eurofighter, not very inspiring, and I'd not have thought very suitable for export purposes.
As with Eurofighter Typhoon calling the A-400M the Eurolifter 'insert name' would be a good solution.

Pfft, airbus is trying to market the A-400 as something new that none other aircraft can deliver, however it isnt.  <_<

Short unpaved field performance just as C-130 and C-17 already can

And how on earth do they want that big chunk to go 700 kph with turbo prop?  The sleek swept wing bear could just do 700 with 4 honkin great engines.

C-130 replacement? Yeah right, wrong size, more like C-130J-30 replacement

First flight was when? In the Farnborough air show magazine of 1994 there is an advertizement for the A-400 saying first was due late 1994...

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Eurolifter - how long before that became the A400M Shirtlifter?

It is, after all, in the finest traditions of the service(s) to take the slightest opportunity to take a name that can easily be turned into something rather rude/risque and bestow the alternative version on the aircraft....

B777LR, the theory about the 400M is - supposedly - that it fills the gap between the C-130J and the C-17. If you can't afford a C-17, but have loads that won't fit in a C-130, the idea - according to the logic applied - is that you buy the A400M.  Of course, that logic runs into the problem that by the time the partner nations manage to get the thing in the air, many of the prospective customers will have lost patience and have  hunted down the back of the sofa for the extra money needed to get the C-17.

Name for A400M?  How about "Delayed again?"  Read something about it on Defensenews.com earlier in the week being delayed another couple of months.

In german service "Farfrommovin" or from what the sound the pilot & Copilot make trying to get it in the air "Funkingruntin"

Japanese service "Neverflew Maru"

France "Le' Soufle" ( hard to get it to rise and falls at the drop of a hat)

as you can tell I'm tired again with the "Sleeplessness sillies"

Nah thast due to the high usage on the current C-17's in service due to Iraq and Afghanisatn coupled with the fact the C-130J are crap. The RAF was willing to sell half the new J's in exchange for additional C-17.

Don't know about the C.4, but the C.5 has certainly been a dissapointment. This is now becoming an issue as the RAF now only have four short fuselage C.1s left.
Some C.3s have been modified to support Special Forces, but they are not idea for the role.

I used to know someone who was a techie at Lyneham; wish I'd asked him about the J.
