Here are now some thoughts about the new flight deck of the Graf Zeppelin:

Add an diagonal flight deck and some outboard lifts. Remove the center-line lifts.

The bow section will also be modified.

The edge of the old flight deck has been prepared to be used as the connection for the the new additional parts of the flight deck.

The red circle shows where one of the new aircraft lifts will be located. Originally, this was the place where smaller boats were stored on the Graf Zeppelin, but they will be removed on this location

Excellent idea.  A-4 skyhawks would also be a good aircraft for your time frame and size of carrier.

Not much progress this week as there is another project running called "kitchen refurbishment". And somehow, I had to shift priorities towards it...

Anyway, I did a few experiments regarding the flight deck and lifts, and right now it looks as if it will go into the following direction:

I am still thinking about the island, how much of the old original bridge should be there and how much of a modernized one?

The parts for the stern flight-deck modification have now been made out of plastic sheets, and the cutout for the first of the two lifts is done.

The island structure, right now I test to keep the original funnel and with an American-style island structure in front of it. Maybe I will replace this with a structure that includes the funnel.

The modified starboard side of the hull, the location for the new lift has been cut out. The openings for the 15cm guns will be closed as the ship will not get any of those anymore.

Lots of work going on eh ? Looks good so far. Don't know much about the Graf Zeppelin, but I do know that I like it ! My only concern is the lack of room on the deck beside the superstructure. Can you even fit a modern9ish) warplane on it ? I guess I'd have to see some to appreciate the scale.

Ok, I have put everything together and then found out that I made an error at the cutout for the aircraft lift, about half a centimeter too far to the stern of the ship  :banghead:

Anyway, there are some planes on the flight deck, a F4 Phantom and a A7 Corsair, pretty simple models which are part of the Zhengdefu kit. And to be honest, they are in 1:800 scale while the carrier is 1:720. So they must be about 2-3mm longer.

The bow part of the flight deck will be modified as well and made a bit longer, together with some new catapult.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Not so much progress, but at least a bit:

Corrected cutout for the starboard aircraft lift:

Cutout for the port aircraft lift:

Additionally, the island structure and its surrounding has grown a bit, all parts are put together for testing right now:

Thanks for your comments so far

I am thinking a bit about the armament for the 1960s Graf Zeppelin:

The 15cm casemat guns will be removed, this is for sure.
The German WW2 10,5 cm heavy AA makes no sense as well.

I want to add two RIM-2 Terrier missle launchers, as they are included in the Kitty Hawk model I use for spare parts. And they would fit into the time frame.
But what about other AA guns, I am a bit uncertain if I should add something at all. Older US carriers in the 1960s had some 12,4 cms guns, so this might be a choise.
I don't think that smaller ones like 40mm or 37 mm would make sense.
