But until then, we're focusing on making the most of the final days of the kids summer holidays, spending it in tranquility in the archipelago. Warm winds, ice cream, open air Defender touring and no particular chores - it could be worse..

Absolutely. There used to be a British newspaper cartoon strip in the Daily Mirror called the Perishers and one of the recurring characters was "Cousin Worsoff" who was never seen, he lived in the sewer, who was that proverbial person who is always worse off than you  ;D

Back to work again. It should be more fun than it is, methinks, but I guess age and routine both contributes to making it somewhat less exciting than it once was.

Anyway - in a dull moment, I got to surf a little bit on the webz for something entirely different, but coming down on a rather nice photo of an Italian Tornado going fast and low. That in turn rattled the mojo enough to dig out the two German Tornados I have in process and sand the latest filler off some trenchlike seams and misfittings. And I actually think that'll do for the time being, allowing me to perhaps even move on building later tonight or tomorrow - should nothing else come in the way. Let's hope it won't. It feels good being at it again.

Continuing googling a bit (watersanding equals drying time), I realised that the Tornado originally was looked upon not only by the three parties actually buying it in the end, but also originally by Belgium, Canada and the Netherlands. While the two first countries quickly left the project for different reasons (Mr Dassault and politics, in that order), the Dutch actually went along for a bit longer, and as I might have procured an extra Tornado (or two), I see an opportunity here..
Looking a bit further, someone quite familiar had already visited this thought as well. At least the transatlantic part of it. Well - I might start with the tulip farmer version, then..  ;)

Maybe a Dutch one in 1939/1940 camouflage  ;)

The Viggen is almost whif in itself, tbh, and replacing it with credibility... Well, maybe the Tornado would do. It definitely was very much a child of the same thought process, in particular the original single seat German PA100 model. STOL (well, of sorts) with thrust reverser and top notch nav/attack systems, multirole, initially focusing on strike/recce, later evolving into a very credible interceptor indeed. It does ring a bell or two, methinks..
The fields-and-meadows camo is a proper pain to replicate, though.  :banghead:

One Defender on the road again and the second at least on its way there. These have been tiring weeks, and it doesn't seem to be over just yet. But at least, I felt enough on top of things today to actually not do anything useful at all, rather softing it out properly, reading in the hammock. Up here in the nordics, you have to take care of the few warm days you get. Soon, it'll be frost on the grass in the mornings..

Speaking of grass - the Bundesluftwaffe Norm 83 camouflage is, as far as I can understand, consisting of the same two greens that the US SEA and Europe One schemes are, substituting the US tan/grey with an almost black black. While that scheme in itself is nice enough, I kind of miss the most German of all postwar German colours, the famous Gelboliv, RAL6014. Accordingly, I'm playing with the idea of modifying the Norm 83 scheme somewhat. There are, as Dizzy most likely will point out, some options already tried by the Luftwaffe themselves, such as the short lived Norm 76, f.i, but I'm not that keen on the dominant Basaltgrau in that scheme.

I might have to paint up some old scrap model as a test. Any day now..

On the Luftwaffe camo topic, here's a chap having painted his Typhoon (or EF2000 as they say over there) in a wraparound Norm 76. Pretty cool, methinks, and we'll worth a look.

Interesting! I like the idea of a dedicated strike variant for the Luftwaffe as a Tonka replacement. The paint scheme looks IMHO better than the standard air superiority grey, even though the paint scheme appears a bit "retro" on the Eurofighter? Makes me wonder about a Eurofighter IDS in Norm '83 livery or one of the experimental Luftwaffe RF-4E low-level schemes from the early Eighties...

Old Wombat

Ain't nuthin' wrong with "retro" schemes!

ALL my builds are in some kind of retro scheme because they look better!

I'm so divided on this. I guess I like the variety of things, and given todays increasing Madchen fur alles-strategy in fighter procurement, I can understand that this is where you end up. But it is boring.
However, both the RAF and the Luftwaffe actually do allow different units to specialise in different roles, and accordingly, their respective aircraft will as a consequence spend more time either low on strike or recce missions or high on air superiority tasks, and hence, in my view at least, that should motivate some differences in schemes.
My guess is that some bean counter may have had an impact here. It's simply cheaper to paint everything alike, and even cheaper not bothering with more than two colours. Unimaginative pricks..

By the way - worst of all are the dark RAM-colours of the stealth types. I'm actively considering rendering stealth technology not workable in my whif scenarios just due to ugliness.

The stealth tech works fine but "The Ugly" counters it with a massive sensor signature.

Maybe it's the dreaded new "Don't Look Here" technology?  ;)

zenrat

Stealth clearcoat.  Has all the technical attributes of the boring ugly grey paint but allows other colours to be used beneath it.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.
