Very annoying!

Well, sleep is the best healer, so they (who "they" are I have no idea) say.

Absolutely hope time fixes it!

Back home after a weekend on the other side of the country, the two German MiGs still have rather different colours as can be seen here

My plan now is to repaint the old scrap Hunter and then test different varnish methods to see if I can keep the hues but still provide the protection as well as the smooth decal base surface I need. Hopefully, I'll find a way and a method that I then can copy back to the MiGs as well as a few other models I have painted with Revell enamels. We'll see when I have the time to get on with it.

One does look slightly lighter/brighter. You could always say it had been given a thorough clean for a high level inspection by some visiting dignitary ?

Well - the difference is rather obvious, and unfortunately, it's the lighter hue I'm after.
I did paint up that scrap Hunter to test, and as you can see below, disappointingly, any gloss varnish (Future at the leading edge, Humbrols gloss at the trailing) seems to darken the three Revell flats rather dramatically. R43, 57 and 77, going from the fuselage out. At the tip, there's Humbrols 127 for comparison. Not much change on that, setting it rather evidently apart. Annoying.
Along the middle of the wing, there's no varnish.

Tomorrow, if I can find some time in an otherwise rather busy day, I'll see if I can give the entire wing a Matt coat, then another gloss on top. Maybe that'll save some lightness?
We'll see.

That is a significant darkening! I've had similar, but nothing so dramatic.

Are the Revell paints acrylic or enamel? Maybe it's a 'feature' of acrylics? Something to do with the porousness of the pigments (he says, making wild guesses, as he doesn't really know what he's talking about)?
Or maybe if the Revell are enamel, it's to do with the 'Green & Earth-Friendly' substances they use?

I'm using enamels, but I'm happy to discuss acrylics in this perspective. Are they as "bad", equally bad or better? Anyone with experience?
Preparing to matt coat the wing just now, and then we'll see once it's dry..

Speaking of which. The Revell matt varnish, R02, is absolutely useless! While this is an earlier experience, it's still valid. Gooey, thick, hard to dilute in a meaningful way and it stinks awfully for three to four days when drying, then leaving a softish, wear- and dirtprone surface. While I'm sure Humbrols variant is indefinitely more poisonous, it does the job where the Revell doesn't.

Now waiting for the testbed to dry. Tedious work, waiting..  ;)

....aaand another thing that comes to mind when looking at the Norm 81 Germans on my desk:

As I think I've been mentioning, I have been aiming for a "prettier" and more colourful look than the actual in-service scheme our Dizzy so expertly has replicated on several builds. While he definitely is right on target for a worn machine, there seems to have been some Phantoms kept in a better state, and when comparing where I am right now with some photos I've found, I'n not that far off my target, methinks. Now it's just to get that sodding grey to stay lighter..

I'm very much an acrylic paint user for main colours (Xtracrylic and Hataka in the main nowadays) and I've had no noticeable hue changes when using Klear as my gloss varnish. Xtracrylic are gloss but I still tend to give them a coat. Hataka are matt and do sometimes show a very slight change in hue, but it's hardly noticeable to my eyes and once matted seems to return to the original shade

That's interesting, Chris - especially the bit about a matt coat bringing it back to where it should be. Thanks for the info.

It's probably a case of my eyes expecting to see a matt finish and thus when it is my brain is happier with it. I'm convinced we all see colours differently anyway, and a lot of our perception is phycological ? Especially when you consider how males/females view colours !

I use Windsor and Newton Galleria as my matt coat by the way.

I'm also an acrylic paint user and i have experienced the same with Tamiya colors. The gloss varnish tends to make the colors a bit darker with the "wet" look but when a matte coat goes on, the colors come back to their original hue.

That the stuff that goes on white and dries clear? I have a bottle in stock but haven't used it much as yet.

How many shades of 'white' can anyone really see? I mean, really? :banghead:
