In the top photo the carrier is most definitely still in Puget Sound, not entering the harbor at San Diego. 

That's a caption fail for whoever wrote it.

Seeing the truck pic in the MPC thread reminded me of the cab-under-load concept - where the cab is car sized and below the cargo bed. The designs of Steinwinter and Colonia are begging for somebody to develop.

Gas turbine trucks? I could go on and on....................

In 1968 while working for Pressed Steel, a colleague and I were asked to strain gauge the prop shaft of an FJ truck up at 'The Austin', the BMC Longbridge plant. The truck turned out to be a prototype gas turbine powered truck which looked just like a standard FJ from the front, but a clue to its power plant was a MASSIVE exhaust stack that towered over the rear of the cab looking for all the world like it had escaped from an American wood burning steam loco!

We worked on it for a few days, and their test team then did some test driving for a month or so before asking us back to add some more gauges. While we were actually doing this, a guy showed up in the garage and told us we had to stop, right NOW, as the gas turbine truck programme had been cancelled! We did of course, while wondering which set of loonies had had us drive all the way from Oxford to stick gauges on a job that was going to be cancelled.

A few days later it all became clear, as Leyland had bought out BMH (British Motor Holdings) a week or so before and it took them that long to find out about the gas turbine FJ, but Leyland were building their own gas turbine truck and couldn't stand for any competition so the FJ got the chop. The Leyland truck people carried on with that 'not invented here' attitude for a long time, which was the ultimate cause of me leaving Pressed Steel for BR in 1969.

Oddly enough I then came across the Leyland Gas Turbine truck as the APT-E train which I was working at BR on used ten of the Leyland turbines to power it!

Because of the 1973 oil crisis almost gas turbine powered projects were either trimmed back or cancelled, and that included the APT-E and the Leyland truck. Today only one example of the Leyland Turbine truck exists, and it's still demonstrated at truck shows, owned by a guy who runs a truck company in March, Cambridgeshire.

He's worried about his single turbine wearing out, and I'm in charge of TWO zero houred turbines sitting in crates in the National Railway Museum. 

We're thinking of some trading agreement.....

The vehicle used to create the Aliens Tardis APC isn't an cab-under truck, it's a Hunslet ATT77 aircraft
tug. Seven were planned but only four were constructed; three used at Heathrow and the last at JFK
in New York.

I've seen that too, and I wonder just how he doesn't scrape the frame getting in and out of driveways and parking lots
