There's some really good 1/144 DC8s about Colin, the Minicraft 62/63/72/73 is a real beaut! I've done at least three of them, in different lengths (some longer than Douglas ever made them... ;)) and they go together really well.

The build thread's here :-

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

That IS interesting, yes. The 'Sarigue' was a one-off (or maybe a two-off....) ex-UTA DC8 fitted out for the SIGINT Task and with those wing tip pods it's a unique shape.

And it's make a nice pairing with my Transall EC-160 Gabriel too..................  ;)

Remember the days when you could visit museums in other countries!  ;D :banghead:

One from the outside display area

And I kept being drawn back to the 'architecture' of the DC8

Well here's the info board for the DC8, and also a picture of the 'canoe' fairing

Oh to be whiffing again :-(

Great build Kit, I can remember seeing the real Aer Turas -63 a few times, we sometimes did horse charters (which they specialized in), the smell hung around for weeks!

I've never had a Minicraft one but I know its a nice kit, I really should get one. I even have a display base for it, a square central windshield panel (one laminate), the perfect size to display a 1/144 -62 (my favorite, the -63 was about 7 tons heavier but with the same power, good for volume only, or for sectors of no more than 4 hours). The first stretched -63 we operated had nose art (except it wasn't on the nose, it was on the wing route), it was called 'Godzilla', as it liked to break pilots. The stretched DC-8 had to double rotate on take off otherwise it would bang its arse on the runway, Godzilla did it at lease twice.

Oh that's WONDERFUL! i didn't know it still existed. And I love the old 'Venetian Blind' engines, not so many of them left now.

Nice to know another DC8 fan Colin.

When I 'commuted' back and forth to Holland in the 80s, flying from Heathrow KLM would use DC9-30s most of the time, but the 6.00 pm return flight on a Friday night was always heavily booked and they'd put a DC8-63 on. I liked to get an aisle seat right at the back and you could SEE the fuselage bend as it rotated at Schiphol.  ;D

KLM also prided themselves on serving a full meal on the 1 hour flight, where BA only supplied snacks. Sometimes the flight attendants would still be collecting the coffee cups as we crossed the threshold at Heathrow!  :o

Interesting looking kit.  Pity Heller doesn't do it, though.  I can see all sorts of uniquely Mach 2 problems with it even before it is released or built... :banghead: :banghead:

I can't seem to find any kit reviews on this latest release.

I happen to stumble across the latest additions to the Mach2 Space kits; 4 in 1/48 scale and 14 in  1/72.
They aren't cheap around £50 per model with plenty of whiffery potential if you are into this sort of thing.

Uh? Reading this and remembering I wanted to order someday a Mach2 kit, I checked their catalogue.
And (sigh of relief) my one is still cheap: Kaman Huskie twin-boom helicopter (to transform into airplane): 19€ = 16£ = $19
I am not sure this will be ordered/done in 2022 but someday maybe.
[the word "realistic" hurts my heart...]

If you shop around you can get secondhand kits at reasonable prices.

Mach2 has recently released the Boeing 727-200 in 1/72 there will be 8 different liveries priced at £83.99. Hannants has five of the airliners in stock.

PR19_Kit

That's a LOT of money, but it's a good looking airliner nevertheless.

There's always the 1/72 KMC resin Boeing 727-200 model kit.

Mossie

Hmm, I'm mildly tempted, but cost combined with Mach 2 un-quality is putting me off.  I fancy it in Oil Spill Response livery as it xwas an occasional visitor for me.  It was based in Doncaster Airport, but since that closed earlier in the month its temporarily based at Teeside, so I'm less likely to see it.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

jcf

IIRC the KMC kit wasn't far off that price when it was released in 1999,
and it had some serious shape issues, the nose in particular.

The eBay listings for the kit are asking ridiculous prices, one guy wants $499.95.
:o

Mach 2 is Mach 2, but sometimes they're not too bad.

Mossie

I know a guy who's a firm believer in Mach 2, willing to put in the effort for something unusual.
