In the last days of the year, a new project has started.

Lets go back over 500 years in time, to the famous "Santa Maria". Of course it will be a modified one.

This is the model (in 1/270 scale):


The number of parts seems to be manageable


As a early start, build a mast:


And now prepare for the modificaitons, I need some more space on the deck. So cut out a part:



Now I have to go to the computer to design a few things...

Many, many years ago when I built the original Airfix Santa Maria (I would of been at Junior school) I was stunned at how small it was and even more so when one of the masters at school used it to explain the idea of scale to us kids by making a crew from matchsticks  To this day I still marvel at the bravery of these guys for crossing what was the great unknown in something so small

Designing and printing the new deck. The first design is the one on the right, the final one on the left. Printed quick & dirty with the FDM printer.


Testing is the deck fits - looks ok just some minor adjustments are required.


Final version of the deck, testing if it fits into the hull.


The orange one is the version that will be added to the model, there was a one millimeter gap that had to be fixed.

I think some of the ship's boats on cruise ships are bigger than the Santa Maria 

Not crossed the Atlantic, but crossing the Pacific was certainly comfortable in one   

Oh my - they really molded the boat and the anchor into the deck?

Yes they did, its a bit like those old Revell ships where the AA guns were also part of the deck....

As said, its a quite simple kit, but I just wanted to have a cheap and small Santa Maria, and this was what I could find.

What is required in every 15th century ship? Of course a steam engine!

So the Santa Maria needs one as well. Which will be 3D printed. But lets start with boiler and funnel first.

First quick & dirty test print of the boiler to see if the dimensions are correct. This is made with the FDM printer and with some very old PLA filament which was not good anymore. But for testing its better then throwing it away.

The next thing to build is the steam engine.

A first test print of the (incomplete) engine, FDM printer, old filament, quick & dirty.


Several other tests while the engine is "growing"

Next thing to design and print will be the paddle wheels.

 

This 3D printing just amazes me  But then I was born in the 20th Century
