Airfix are very near the top of the list here as the most expensive kits to buy.
We'll take a P-51 for an example..Tamiyas P-51D can be had for $50 or less..Airfix's is closer to $90nz ..Airfix's might be newer but it's 40 bucks more and 40 bucks is 40 bucks.
I am very excited by the work Airfix has been doing but the cost per kit in NZ had blown many of them out of the water for me - WNZ is dead on. There are UK-based sellers on TradeMe (our eBay clone) who offer free postage and are still somehow cheaper than NZ sellers. It's nuts.

One wants to support local businesses but when nearly half the price can be saved...
Zac remember when this lot of nuttas where going on and on about the new Airfix Hunter a wee while ago ??..I wanted one and when it got here ..damn !! .
Trade Me has proven to be oretty good for Airfix but it's still out of my realm of coin spendage.
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .

The Wooksta!

The Airfix magazine has a build of the PR16.  Not impressed with it. No photos of the new sprue.

Not sure if this would work for NZ but in the States I've sometimes ordered direct from their website.  Club members get a discount and to the USA of you spend a certain amount shipping is free. Its a high amount, maybe $200 IIRC but when the 1/48 Bucc came out I got 4.  One for me, one for w coworker and two I put on eBay months before it was a available in the USA.  Listed at a fair price and made enough to almost cover my own copy from people who didn't wabt to wait for it to hit these sunny shores.

If free shipping is available there maybe a group of you Kiwi Modelers could go in together and place an order.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Scarey thing ..the only kiwi modellers I know are on here  and the price is 2.5 times more than the English £..so that hurts eight from the get go.
We are few and far between in this country and since im a invalid im the brokest one of them ..invalids benefit is crap man but that's NZ for ya ...it will be a pipe dream for awhile for me in afraid and of course other things keep getting in the way....I saved up to buy a couple of models I wanted ..tamiyas P-51D in 48th and MK24 Spitfire..then I found a monogram 48th P-38J which I really need and a epic score..a trumpeter 48th Seafang ..cost about the same ..started to save again for my birthday..I need a new bigger hard drive  ;D

Quote from: McColm on March 03, 2023, 11:40:22 PMIs there any reason why Airfix kits can't be manufactured in the UK, the carbon footprint would reduce the overseas container fees?
I think that costs, particularly wages were the main reasons production was shifted overseas. I guess it makes good business sense. If all production was shifted back to the the UK and, it resulted in much higher production costs and prices would people then not start complaining  even more about Airfix (already high) prices?

I admit to not being a business person or, being knowledgeable about the ins and outs of economics so, I'm happy to stand corrected.

What's shifting is that transport costs are going up and up and that may eventually more than compensate for the labour/efficiency penalties of making finished good locally.

It's also worth pointing out that Dapol have always made their models in the UK, from ex-Airfix moulds, although admittedly they also have lots of other product lines.

Is it transport COSTS or transport prices?

Not quite the same thing.

Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
