This is not the conversion that the USN had in mind, but I think it is somewhat more practical.

Interesting. When I saw CG I wondered if you meant Coast Guard.

Very nice build indeed, but isn't that a WW2 Atlanta/Oakland hull rather than a Cold War Virginia?

Well, yes it is a WW2 hull, thus the subject line. There was indeed a USN proposal to update the Atlantas into missile cruisers, but it looked more like a Belknap. You cannot view this attachment.

I wonder if the CL-154 project had come to fruition what might have happened with it post WWII.  I know this photo is from World of Warships, but visually they probably got the CL-154 (USS Austin in game) late 1940s config right.  The ship is basically an Atlanta/Juneau hull armed with twin versions of the 5 inch Mk 42 mount found on ships like the Forrest Sherman DDs and Knox FFs, and twin 3 inch AA mounts.  Still 12 main guns, could probably keep two of them and put an ASROC launcher and a Terrier launcher with a vertical magazine in place of the other 4.  Maybe add a couple of Phalanxes in place of the 3 inch mounts down the line, along with some ASW torpedo tubes?

Hi Spino.

I think the plan you're thinking of for CL-154 is this one. (scheme C, November 1944) It was apparently the "favored" design.

IIRC, the guns were some alternate vision of the Mk 41, and I think that this alternate evolved into the Mk 42 single.

Meanwhile, I assumed that CL-154 would be built on an Atlanta hull, sort of like Scheme A.

Some have assumed that because the Scheme A drawing is from June 1942, it could not be part of the CL-154 program. While the General Board killed this design pretty quickly, I think it does represent the starting point of the CL-154 project.

Just triggered an idea, and I looked through the stash for my leftover bits from a Midway.  I only found 3 of the 5"/54 turrets, hoping I had more.  I might have others stashed elsewhere for an CLAA upgrade.
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

Of course, those would be Mk 39 singles, which are about 33 tons each, as opposed to the Mk 42, which are about 73 tons each. From a weight perspective, you could certainly stuff more Mk 39s on an Atlanta hull than Mk 42s. I'd be interested to know what you come up with. I've got a bunch of Skywave Mk 39s lying around, and I need weird ideas too.

This thread is increasingly pulling me away from my ongoing 1/72 aircraft builds towards the 1/700 ship stash. Must... be... strong..

Ship models are narrower so you can fit more on a shelf.

But they tend to have more "sticky out bits" to catch as you go past  ;) Mind you a lot of the more modern ones don't.

Iron Ship Wrights do a 1/350 HMS Agincourt but you may need to sell a kidney or your first-born child to buy one.

Flyhawk do a 1/700 version in styrene at a more reasonable price.
