There was also the MiG Ye-152A that led to the J-8I, it differs in that has a fattened rear rather than whole fuselage.

According to various sources, including Russian, the one has nothing to do with the
other aside from both having basically an enlarged MiG-21 layout.

The 'pen-nib' exhausts of the J-8 are reminiscent of the MiG-19.

:Shrugs:. There are several sources that they it did.  While not a direct copy, there was certainly Soviet input into the design, and no-one can say for certain if any data from the Ye-152 program got to China or not.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

At the time they were working on the J-8 they were on the outs with the Soviet Union.
Russian and Chinese sources state no connection, Western "sources" simply repeat
assumptions.

It's a matter of convergent evolution, there are only so many ways you can scale
up a "MiG-21".

I totally agree with you

My main source is Deino's (Andreas Rupprecht) book Dragon's Wings.  He quotes a Chinese designer who worked on the J-8 who states that they worked 'hand in hand' with the Soviets.  I can dig out more for you both if you wish?

We could go on and on like this for ever, each 'side' quoting its own ideas of the more 'accurate' references............... (sigh)
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Iv'e been looking and can't find a model of the J-8A  :banghead: So to build one a lot of scratchbuilding/crosskitting will need to be done and there is no guarantee that any drawings are going to be accurate or to scale either

Gondor

There is none. IIRC, there's an 1:144 kit from Trumpeter, and you get an 1:72 and an 1:48 J-8II (with side air intakes), but unfortunately not the J-8A.  :-\

I might give it a go. Not going to be any speed build, just a bit now and again. Way too many builds that have stalled and loads of projects to do as well.

...and Modelsvit does a MiG E-152A:

Probably the best bet, but the kit is quite pricey...  :-\

I decided to start a seperate thread for the Shenyang J-8 as I will probably give it a go as a background build.
