This news brief is slated to appear in the next issue of Classic Wings magazine in a couple of months, until then I've got to write up a full history article on our newest family member. Graham Orphan took these pics from Robert Borrius-Broek's L-39 ZK-LLR, which came up to Woodbourne especially for the post-restoration flight.

CHECKMATE FOR 'CZECH RIDE'![/b]

The slightly clouded skies over Marlborough reverberated to the roar of a Walter Titan turbojet as Zac and Lana Yates' Aero L-39 Albatross took to the air after a very deep restoration. ZK-CZK, as the aircraft is registered, was imported into New Zealand in November last year, airworthy but in need of an overhaul. The Yateses (owners of a stunning Spitfire replica, Strikemaster and P-51D) decided instead to strip the aircraft down and restore her from the ground up. This, the most in-depth restoration we've see on the pretty Eastern jet, was completed on August 2.
At the moment they are unsure as to what scheme CZK will wear for the airshow season, but they do hope it'll be applied in time for her debut at Classic Fighters 2007 at Omaka. So for the time being the "brand-new" jet, cunningly named "Czech Ride", will fly in bare metal and zinc chromate.
The next project for the pair of young aviators is to get their Waco YMF-5 onto the NZ civil register, meanwhile another, more airworthy aircraft is set to join their rapidly expanding collection. We can't reveal much at present but watch this space!

Zac, I gotta hand it to ya... I've NEVER gotten the hang of painting pilot figures!

I salute you.
