Okay, here's Randall Whitcomb's interpretation of the RAF GOR339 version of the Arrow.  I gather from Randall that it's based on a lot of discussions with Jim Floyd.  This missile is a scaled-down Blue Steel that Avro Canada was advised about by the RAF.

THe inlets for this vesion of the Arrow are Fieri inlets as proposed for the Arrow Mk.3 and follow-ons.  There are some good drawings of the wind tunnel model int eh book by the Arrowheads.  TSRJoe has my copy of the 1/48 Arrow Mk.3 vac-form from Straosphere Models.

Hiya all, so far iv managed to make a set of moulds of the relevant bits from the Stratosphere Models 1/48 scale Mk.2 & Mk.3 Arrow vac forms kindly passed over on loan from Evan. As yet im still in the process of making the masters for 1/72 conversions for same based upon the Hobbycraft 1/72 scale kit, another in my growing to get my butt in gear pile!

cheers, Joe

ps. does anyone know of any drawings of the '339 Arrow'? iv got the excellent Randall Whitcomb book (definately a recommended read, cheers, Evan) and the Arrowheads volume on the Avro Arrow which also has a mention on a RAF. bomber proposal (hmm..strange theres no mention of the RAF. fighter order!!?)

I might have something, but I'm going to have to excavate for some time to find it. :(  There was a rather detailed collection of information but together by a Canadian and published privately.  It's exceedingly comprehensive in its scope and coverage, running to some eight softcover binders full of data.  I think I managed to buy one of the last full sets back in 2001; I just don't know what where they've gotten to since the 2003 move.  As time permits I'll cig for it, but I make no promises of early recovery.

This led me asking why the SO-4050 Vautour was not assessed for the GOR-339... with more powerful engines (UK had so much advance on this field compared to Sncema!!!)
and improved elctronics, it would have been something. According to Israeli pilots testimonies, they could flew from North Africa (or Istres, in southern France) to Israel without refueling. On the way, they even avoid interception by Greek F-86 by climbing at 48 000 ft!
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Probably the same prejudice that kept the Buccaneer from serious consideration, it wasn't supersonic and air staffs were fixiated on supersonic performance at the time.
