I've been reading a very interesting book about the Canadair CF-5 which is put out under the In Canadian Service series of books.  It goes through the history of the aircraft and also some history as to why it was picked for the RCAF.

It turns out that the RCAF really wanted the F-105 as it was perfroming very well in Vietnam at the time but the Canadian Government in it's wisdom decide what the RCAF really needed, was the CF-5 instead.

I would have to say that this will lead to some very speculative What-If CF-105's coming from my stash sometime in the future.  And just imagine them being built in Canada too, under a licence agreement.

This is the CF105 :) - the Canadians will feed you to the huskies!

No doubt the Thud would have had to have some totally different CF number if chosen.  The other contenders in the competition were the F4, F111, A5, A6 and A7.  TSR 2 would have been nice too, but long gone by the selection date!

A big Thud in CDN colours would look great, but we all know we chose the Phantom instead.

Looking forward to seeing some of your Thuds, especially if you do one in 1 Air Div colours !

*chuckle* How about Canadian purchase of the Thunderchief, and manufacturing rights starting earlier and, in a bid for increaed "local content", the Iroquois replaces the J75 in Canadian aircraft.

You ned up with  the following:

Mk.1 - generally equivalent to F-105B
Mk.2 - generally equivalent to F-105D, but all with T-Stick II and revolving door weapons bay.
Mk.3 - generally equivalent to F-105F, but, like the Mk. 2, all with T-Stick II and revolving door weapons bay

Mk.3 might be adapted for multi-role use with different "packs" replacing the revolving door.  You might even have a "buldged door" version with extra fuel.

In reality, after cancelling the Arrow, the Diefenbaker government looked at purchasing F-105s and re-engining them with the Irouquois engines. After crunching the numbers, it was discovered that they would be MORE expensive than the cancelled Arrows!

However, HAD it been done, I anticipate the planes would have been unofficailly known as "BlunderDiefs" :D

And you know, as a follow on the the "Clunk", a "Thud" would be somehow correct.

Thud!!! Did you hear that, it sounded like another F-105 was shot down!!!

Mk.4 - generally equivalent to F-105G Wild Weasel

An F-105G with full Wild Weasel stores, Maple Leafs, and a euro scheme for service in Germayn would look pretty cool!!!  B)

And later, after the failure of the F-111, the USAF decide to replace it by an upgraded Thud, (based on the two-seat variant, more practical for ground-attack) powered by a F-100 engine and having a downgraded F-111A weapon system (to fit on the smaller nose of the F-105).
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

QuoteThud!!! Did you hear that, it sounded like another F-105 was shot down!!!

Well generally they did very well considering the constraints that were imposed on them.

Like: you can only enter the north here    and fly down this corridor   and only attack these targets  .  Then only use this corridor to exit   :dum:

Even a blind man would soon clue in and place all the triple A right there.
