this is an actual design by SNECMA for the final coleopter design for a Mach 3 interceptor (flight duration : 15 mn)

this was not a too fun model to build because a lot of sanding was required to get the right annular wing.

Very cool, JCC!!! It looks like something out of the old Buck Rodgers serials from the 1930s!

Ca en jette!!! (It rocks!)
The original Coleoptere figured in Dan Cooper adventure "le mur du silence" (the silence barrier). Nils are you here?
In this adventure, Dan Cooper lands its Triangle bleu on the Montcalm RCN carrier, were it is joined by the Coleoptere. Japanese pirates are cutting wings of passenger planes with ultra high-speed egg-shaped aircrafts...
My Mom received Tintin Magazine in the late 50's, and I managed to save some of them. Later I bought the whole comic Dan Cooper...
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

I am lucky enough to read French and your whole model story from a tube of vitamin tablets is pretty delicious! :D
Our English-speaking friends SHOULD read it, asking AltaVista or Google to translate (approximately)...
Thanks for this piece of cake, dear JCC. ^_^

Tophe ; thank you for your comments ... the story may be delicious to read but i can tell you that sanding that tube week after week was boring ... I may do a story on Coleopters in French Air Force for the WHIFF newsletter however ...

Archibald : the Coléo in Dan Cooper is ( I think)  based on the Zborowski Hanneton (part of the Coleopter family) , Coleopters were mentionned by name in Bob Morane's "Oasis K ne répond plus" and in Tanguy et Laverdure's "Danger dans le ciel" which also features an annular-wing Mirage ( and then there was a annular-wing US Navy prototype in Buck Danny's "SOS soucoupes volantes"

and finally I found an ATAR Volant in Bob Mallard's "l'affaire du Gravitor"

Any one VTOL aAnnular wing design  that I missed in French popular litterature ?
