Hello all,

I was in my LHS earlier today and got a look at a new kit by Amodel: 1/72 Hawker Fury.

This is the interwar biplane Fury that was the genesis of the Hurricane. They issued at least two kits of it: one  as a Spanish Civil War version and one as a Yugoslav one.

Anyway, this looks like a real leap up in quality for Amodel: nice clean molding, zero flash, nice clean recessed panel lines, much better interior detail than I've ever seen in their kits before.

Its still clearly a limited run kit as there are no positive locating devices and the sprue connections are still a tad on the heavy side.

The only weak points at first glace seem to be poor printing of the painting instructions and poor registration of the decals (I bought the Yugoslav version).

If you like the interwar stuff, but cringe at the Amodel name, you might want to reconsider them and give this kit a look see. I was very pleased by the clear improvement on moulding quality that this kit represents for Amodel.

Best part is its quite affordable compared to the usual Amodel price range.

How shall we whiff this, gents?

Whiffing the Fury - delete the upper wing, give it spats and put in early Hurricane markings as the Fury Monoplane.
Damn where where you when I started my almost completed Fury? Wjhat a great idea. The old Lindbergh Kit is a nice little number.

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

Remove lower wing, add stubby wing-like wrap around radiators in the position of the lower wing, put it on floats, slightly larger tail and put it in Porco Rosso.

Definately give it spats! Spats enhance the coolness factor of any aircraft by about 1000%!

I love spats!

Beautiful aeroplane, I'll have to check my LHS. Due for a visit there !

As for a whif, how about RCAF ? I'm sure you could put leafy roundels on it, as I'm sure we would have kept them flying until around 52.

;)
CANADA KICKS arse !!!!

So I love Lee's suggestion and Fury whiffing is on my mind. Howzabout getting a Fury and a Hurricane kit and....
1. Fury fuselage and Hurricane wings, spats, open pit, the link between the Fury and the Hurricane.

2. Hurricane fuselage with Fury Bi-plane wings and fixed u/c as a sorta Gladiator contempary?

We'd need names for them though.

Got the Yugoslav version myself the other day. As Upnorth say's very nice kit but it's impossible to make out the colour demarcations on the painting instructions.

However my transfers are in perfect register - luck of the draw I suppose  :)
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I was going to do something similar with the Hawker Hart that I've got in the stash.

I picked up the other Amodel Fury my LHS had on it's shelf today and got a Smer repop of the old Heller Hurricane IIc to bash it together with.

This past weekend I managed to find a nice set of Imperial Yugoslav roundels to replace the cruddy ones in the first kit I bought, so that kit will be going straight from the box.

The one I bought today was the Spanish Civil War one and it suffers from barely decipherable painting instructions too. I'm seriously considering making my Fury/Hurricane bash in Spanish markings.

I cut the Hurricane wings off at the outside ends of the gear wells and thinned the outer sections down a bit to use for the project.

She'll definitely be open cockpit and fixed gear, I'll make a decision about spats when I'm more commited to where she'll be operating

I want to reflect how the RAF was hesitant to fully give up on biplanes so I might run a strut of some sort from either side of the fuselage just ahead of the cockpit to points out on the upper surface of the wings. I think that will keep it looking quite nicely British interwar era.

I've got a bit of a backstory brewing in my mind where this aircraft, as a front line fighter, serves in relatively small numbers and a short period of time in the RAF. Its true success is as a cheap export fighter for British allies and that it would be license built in great numbers in several countries.

The aircraft was very fast and responsive and what was learned from it and its performance during the Spanish Civil War and in Finnish hands against the Soviets was put to use in refining the Hurricane. As a result, the Hurricane was a much more refined aircraft in all aspects at the outbreak of the Battle of Britain than it was in reality.

Within the first year of WWII the entire RAF fleet of the type had been transfered to Training Command with a handfull going to Transport Command as high speed courier aircraft within Britain. As the type had excellent low altitude performance, many future Typhoon pilots learned basic weapons delivery in the type.

It had very limited combat use during the war and most operators used it for training, liason or recce work.

Many continued to serve after the war. Today there are several restored airworthy examples worldwide and are often seen flying alongside Harvards at airshows.

Well, thats the story so far.

As for names, some that have come across my mind are:
Hell Hound
Phoenix
Dagger

How about just 'Hound'?  Doesn't Hawker generally use 'H' names for it's fighters?  Hart, Hind, Hurricane.
