Napier Sabre engine size

Just asking this, mind you, but just how big was a Sabre as compared to, say, a DB-605? If cowling mods wre made, would a Sabre fit (hypothetically) an Fw-190D or Do-335?

I think a Griffon would...

Hmm. OK. Griffon "power egg" it is, as fitted to the Shackleton, Lincoln, and North Star.

Anyone have one?  I know ther there were some 1/72 resin conversion kits around at one time. If I could get one, or even a *gasp!* recast of just the engine module thaqt'd be great...

Paragon's Lincoln isn't available, but Flightpath's is. ( a very nice set BTW)

Here's some photos of my attempt at a Hawker Fury prototype with the Griffon
and my guesstimate of what a Tempest Mk.III (it might be the Mk.IV) would have looked like.  These two aircraft used the same serial number, LA610.

Some information I have been given by an Air-Britain specialist on Tempests, would indicate that a Griffon 'power egg' was what is found on a Firefly.  Someone could probably correct me if I'm wrong here but the Typhoon Mk.II had one of these installed before the aircraft was renamed Tempest.  Of interest, the specialist told me that the drawing he has seen of the Typhoon Mk.II had full eliptical wings drawn in, like a classic Spitfire wing.

The Griffon is shorter than a Merlin, that's why "Precious Metal" has her engine further aft than other Mustangs.

I think that the Griffon was longer AND heavier, which is why Precious Metal has her engine installed further back, Ollie.  There was a discussion here on this a couple of months ago I think.

Griffon is shorter, taller and heavier.

From the Griffon Mustang thread:
Griffons varied in length from between 71 to 82 inches, were 30.3 inches wide, 46 inches in height and weighed 1,980 lbs...the two-speed two-stage supercharged Merlins, such as the V-1650-7 most commonly mounted in the P-51, were 88.7 inches long, 30.7 inches wide, 40 inches in height and weighed in the area of 1,650 lbs.

Expensive way of doing it & from what I've heard it's a pig of a kit & robbing the engines are probably all it's good for, but you'd have plenty of bits for the spares box.

Tell it how it is Wooksta!  I've no idea personaly, just going on a few what I'd heard.

I'm with you on modellers being spoilt.  It's nice to have a kit that falls together now & then, but what do you learn from that?  How to glue plastic, that's about it.  Living in Hull, I got to cut my teeth on Airfix kits so I learned a thing or too about poor fit early on!  Some talk about kids being put off modelling by such kits, but when I was starting out I didn't care too much if the wing halfs overlapped each over by several mil, or if the tail was warped round the nose, as long it looked roughly like what I was trying to model in the end, & lets face it, they all do.  In reality theres only a handful of kits that are true b*****ds.

Lets hope Airfix haven't gone entirely tits up, they're probably the only ones ever likely to kit a Shack, at a push Trumpeter.  Would have looked nice alongside the Nimrod.

Got no problem here getting my hands dirty with putty and sanding. I was just hoping that the "power eggs" were available on the aftermarket or that someone had one of these beasts they were willing to part with an engine from. Just the one...
