New workspace

I must admit that I dreamof someday having one of those great custom built modeling rooms like they occasionally show in Finescale Modeler.  You know the kind, the ones with granite countertops and a little built in spray booth.

The problem is, I hate being shut away by myself building a model.  I much prefer to be out with the family with something good on TV or some good music playing.  To me it's great to have a little "couple time" with me building a model and Donna knitting away while we watch a movie.  To facilitate this kind of building I built a butt-ugly workspace out of some scraps of wood and an old tea trolley-type thing.  It worked great, and Donna didnt even mind this monstrosity in the living room for a day or two, but if a build drags out it really gets on her nerves, even if I tuck it away in a corner.

So....I came home from work last night to find my new workspace discreetly tucked away beside the couch, tastefully hidden by a plant and a lamp.  Donna had grabbed an old TV stand from her mom's house when she moved last month, and had turned it into a modeling station!

When not in use it wheels away discreetly so Donna doenst mind it being on the living room all the time.  When it's time to build something it gets wheeled out in front of the couch so I can build in front of the TV.  The old VHS racks slide out to provide space for some paints, thinners, various bowls and tools etc.  The doors at the bottom hide the toolbox, little blue drawer dealie full of tools and paints, spare parts box and a small trash can and a boxes for the current project.  The slot that originaly housed a VCR has room for reference books for the current project and other odds and ends.

An old kitchen butcher-block cutting board makes a great worksurface, and it fits perfectly in the VCR slot when not in use.  Add a coaster for beer/tea/coffee and, as the French say, VOILA!  Family room modeling in a tidy little package.

Anyway, before I get started on my Sea Jaguar I thought I'd share this new workspace.

So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Cool !

I'm in the same boat as you, Nick. I love to build, but I hate being in a little room by myself. I do all of my work in front of the tele with the wife/kids. In the summer, I build outside when we have friends over ! It used to piss them off, but hey, what's the big deal ? I'm still sitting there, talking and hanging out !

I still plan on doing up a hobby room, but it will be mostly for storage and airbrushing......or having other model geeks over.

I know exactly how you both feel!  Might be over-the-top, but I designed our new home around our central, combined hobby/craft/computer room the way many "normal" people design their home around a kitchen or living room.

You're lucky though: if MY wife did anything 'discreet' with my modeling supplies, it would mean that I'd never see them again.   :o

Wow that's great AD! Your wife must really love you!

Mrs. Scooterman and I prefer to have a combined hobby room although the last two places rented we are in different rooms.  In our dream house there will be a designated hobby room with all of our stuff, a big honkin' TV and a fecking KILLER sound system.

Or nowadays, the garage.

But I don't know about this combined room deal....I think I'd rather have the communal in the living room and seperate his/ hers. Then I won't get all her goofy girlie crap cluttering up all my manly plastic models !
