and why not an AEW HS-681 with a lower tail and a radome on top of the tail (a la Iraqi An-74 AEW) ?
^_^
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Or alternatively bulged nose & tail radomes like the abortive Nimrod AEW:

Good work F-14!  I especially like the SAF version, it just looks right in those colours.  You'd need some good sunglasses when stood around the Canadian aircraft!

Simon.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Quotenice profiles Mossie, must try to figure out how to kitbash one in 1/144...

Think I've worked out the best aircraft to use, the Kawasaki C-1 is as close as you'll get.  Looks & dimensions are similar to the early HS.681, you'd need to extend & straighten the wing, find four suitable engines, change the tail & the nose profile.  That's just for starters, there'd me more work to do depending on how close you wanted to get.  It'd be more work to do the later version 681.

BUT (there's always a but), getting hold of a kit of a C-1 probably won't be too easy.  The only one I know of is the Hasegawa kit & at 1/200 it's an odd scale.  It's not easy to get hold of outside the US or Japan either.  So you can do it, but getting the donor kit is the main thing.  Here's hoping Thorvic has one to offer soon!

A three view and a few shots for comparison

Just a tought, in the STOL mode can a HS-681 land on a 260 m carrier (Clemenceau, Ark Royal, Essex... ?)
Could be cool to have it as a COD aircraft (hey, the Hercules did it on the Forrestal)
