I understand it's a type of duck, but I can't imagine that the JA-37 is named after a defenseless little duck - unless of course the duck is somehow related to the grail rabbit.

Wikipedia also claims it is, "the clap of Mjolnir, Thor's hammer." - what part of a hammer is the, "clap" ?
Someday, I'll even finish a model ...

Iranian F-14A

From what I've always heard,Viggen is Swedish for  Thunderbolt. So,"the clap of Mjolnir, Thor's hammer" could be say,a clap of thunder. And a clap isn't part of the hammer, its a loud, sudden noise.

Lets me explain like this:

Thor swings his hammer or throws it at orgs, and when he swings/throws the hammer, it makes thunderclaps. :ar:

Edit: also heard that claps came when hammer hit the orcs

Viggen is Swedish for "Thunderbolt", which must be one of the most popular airplane names:

P-47
A-10
JA/AJ-37

The new Iranian F-5 variant is called "Saeqeh", which is Persian for "Thunderbolt".

No, the name Viggen translated to English is Thunderbolt. However, there is a Swedish word vigg. That is a Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula), a medium-sized diving duck with a population close to one million birds. But that has nothing to do with the aircraft ...

Don't forget the Italian WWII fighter the Macchi C.202 Folgore (Thunderbolt) ;) And in Japan they had the Raiden (Or was it the Shinden ) which also meant thunderbolt
