So I have been doing some thinking about some possible enteries for the 3rd World GB. When I came across a picture of a Yak-28 Brewer I instantly new it was an aircraft I would like to model, but I have had some problems coming up with some whiff ideas for it. There was also some thing about it that just seemed familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it, until a few hours ago. The layout of the engines under the wings with fuel tanks out board of the engines reminds me of the Do 31 VTOL transport, which got me to thinking...

It is well known that the Soviets were more successfull at stealing the latest technology from the west and simply reverse-engineering it than developing a similar technology them selves. And it is also when known that they had excellent human intelligence which enabled them to steal these secrets from the west. So it is entirely likely that the Russian were able to get there hands on the blue prints for the Pegasus engine and maybe even tried to build a version of there own. And its reasonable to guess the Russian were also able to get there hands on some test data from the Do 31.

Given the number of nukes that the US had during the cold war the vulnerability of airfields wouldn't have been a problem faced only by the west so I was thinking...

Take a Yak-28, replace the undering turbojets with Russian copies of the Pegasus, replace the under wing fuel tanks with several lift jets, and shorten the wings a little bit eliminating the pylons to improve VTOL performance. What you would have is a VSTOL bomber capable of operating from almost anywhere and able to carry a large nuclear payload deep into enemy territory.

What do y'all think???

Brilliant! I like this idea
Well, you could try this with  bombers with podded engines...
I suggest Vautour, Canberra and Skywarrior.  ;)

French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Great idea!

Unfortunately, the only Yak-28 kits I'm aware of are the Amodel series and they are a bit pricey to be whiffing around with.

Alternately you could go for something like the BAe P.103:

Is it possible to place lift jets inside the engine pods, intake being on top, exhaust below? I would imagine engine placement being inconveniant.
How about harrier type exhausts then? No main exhaust for the podded engines
Finally, my favorit   8 small lift jets placed inside fuselage, like that mirage VTOL!

But then your wasting a bunch of space in the fuselage that could be used for fuel, and you can put any stores under the fuselage as well.

Fuel would be no problem, just place it in wing tanks! ;)  Bombs could be on wings? Under cockpit? It could of course carry 2 antiradar missiles under wings, and act as anti-hawk/patriot system
