Naturally, I discovered the B-18 Bolo and the B-23 Dragon at some point after I had come up with the idea, which really freaked me out.  But mine will be a GOOD-looking aircraft concept-----more like a mini-B-17, right down to turrets, waist gunners and even an enlarged tail cone taper and revised tailfin to accommodate a tailgunner position.

HARRUMPH...

The B-23 IS a GOOD-looking aircraft.

Anyhow, the DC-1/2/3 series aircraft did not have spars per se passing through the fuselage...the wing stubs were built as part of the fuselage structure and the outer wings bolted to the stubs. The area beneath the cabin floor between the wing roots was a series of transverse corrugated-aluminum sheathed boxes or cells...thus the name 'Northrop Multi-cell Construction' as the concept was that of Jack Northrop and had been used on his own designs. It also featured on other later Douglas products. Piercing these structural cells to install vertical bomb-cells would be a doubtful proposition. (BTW the He 111 was not the only aircraft to use that holdover from WWI...they were also a feature of the SM 79.) The multi-cell wing construction was one of the reasons for the deep belly on the B-18.
Jeffrey's pics of the external paratroop cannister carriage would be a good model to follow for bombs...or use a semi-streamlined wooden bomb pannier of the sort the Germans used on the Ju 388.

Here is a LINK to DC-3 cutaway from the Flight Archive site:

A couple of 388 shots, the panniers had normal bomb-doors.
