I remember seeing in a book some years back a proposal for a KB-1B Lancer.

Would this be the pic you were talking about - bottom proposal?

So ya see there were no airframes to spare and the "Carter killed the B-1, Reagan saved the B-1" line so often used, is an oversimplification.

And I thank you for that concise and detailed answer. I knew someone would step up to correct my "oversimplified" statement and you're that man. Glad to see someone's still willing to defend Carter these days. He needs all the help he can get.

Funny you should mention that, a KB-2 would've been comparatively easy to do given the production breakdown and would be ideal for refuel "Classified Assets".  I've a couple ideas for this one and might just see what I can work up.
