The "Letter USA" column is he March SAMI by Stephan Wilkinson absolutely hits it on the spot. Not only does he go on about how he's finding himself concentrating on models of those aircraft that look kind of weird (as I do) - he calls them the "seeme'd a good idea at the time" aircraft but then goes on to describe some of the aircraft written about by Brock Yates and illustrated by Bruce McCall in "Major Howdy Bixby's Album of Forgotten Warbirds".

Someone (Alvis ?) once posted some pictures of these and they were absolutely brilliant. The article also asks if in today's PC climate an article like this would be possible, although as it was published in Playboy origionally they might still get away with it  ;)

Seriously if you only browse SAMI on the shelves, read the article and remind yourself of more innocent times and raise a smile  :P 'cause at he end of the day that's what it's all about

Chris

Oh by the way March's SAM has a rather nice TSR2 build

The person I instantly thought of when I read that article was Alvis :)

I actually have a copy of "Zany Afternoons" by Bruce McCall, and a few pages worth of the planes are included. Gotta get my scanner up and working...

Quoted from the article:

"Those of us who build scale models often take them too seriously... We find it hard to see the humour, even the outright goofiness in their shapes.  Not me.  I'm going to do some silly plane modelling."

It's nice to see this sentiment coming from a mainstream magazine.  I got slightly rankled by this cloumn a few months ago when he wrote about tiny details being incorrect & how every modeller should know the workings of an aircraft.  It wasn't enough to get my back right up & I could see his point, but I didn't think it was worth him getting riled about, we all make slight details errors on our models, but does it really matter in the end?

Then I read this article & I felt much better, it seems even some of the hardcore rivet counters may be coming around to our way of thinking!

Chris, the TSR2 was in Feb's issue.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Did I mention that I love spats?

Retro's pic above reminds me of the artcles they used to occasionally run in 'Road & Track' magazine featuring ridiculously funny, fictional car concepts as if they were real (coal powered Soviet behemoths etc.).

Perhaps sometime in the future we should consider a "Silly Build" GB where the goal is to produce the most ridiculous looking monstrosity.  Kind of like the episode of the Simpsons episode where Homer designs a car.

So I got that going for me...which is nice....
