Had the RN retained a KG V and Vanguard in mothballs into the late 1970s- 1980s.... how would you have them moderized for service in the 1980s-90s????

A few thoughts.....

add CIWS

Harpoon

Tomahawk ABLs

Possibly delete aft guns- add hangar and flight deck for Helos and SHARS

Capacity for a contingent of RM

as to aft flight deck- possible mix of SHARS and helos dependant of mission???

As a note- one of my favorite WiF models in the Nichimo USS Iowa " Faces II " w/ a flight deck for AV-8s, Hapoon TLAM ABLs, CIWS. Built 2 plus 2 waiting to be built : ). I add this comment to show what might be possible. I'm thinking of doing a KG V forthe 1980s.....

Imagine the differnce one of these would have made during the Falklands War!

I look forward to ideas/comments.

That's exactly the sort of thing I was going to suggest.

Since HMS Vanguard was based on the design of the the Lion-class and a battlecarrier version of that was studied, a conversion like this would definitely be plausible and make a lot of sense.  Perhaps a Harrier FG.11 in the markings of Det. 1, 804NAS as assigned to HMS Vanguard?

I've done this before on another forum but here is another proposed refit. Those 15in guns would have come in handy in the Falklands for sure. A few salvoes and those Argies would have given up much quicker.

1960s refit:
Remove 5.25in and replace with six Sea Cat SAM
Remove Y turret and fit Sea Dart with two Type 909 radars.
Upgrade all radars and maybe fit Broomstick.
Heli pad aft

1980s refit
Add eight to sixteen Exocet
Replace Sea Cat with four Sea Wolf and add four Phalanx
Add Tomahawk as well

Or use the turrets to build two newer support ships. (I feel a whiff profile coming on...)

I wouldn't recommend removing the Y turret. I would seriously affect the ships CoG and balance. There would also be the issue of having to cut into the armoured deck, which would involve a great deal of problems and cost. Once the turret is removed there is also the issue of how to deal with the armoured barbette, on a BB, this is no small problem. The USN baulked at removing the III turret on the Iowas due to cost, so I doubt that the RN could, but never mind that this is a Whif
A standard Iowa style conversion would be, IMVHO, a far better option.

I'd argue that the 6in cruisers Lion, Tiger and Blake would have been far more useful in the Falklands than a KGV or Guards Van.
6in guns are actually better for NGFS, and the latter two cruisers have a good rotary wing capability as well as being able to carry at least some RMs.

I wouldn't remove all the 5.25" guns. remove the top four turret and replace with Seacat in the 1960s, upgrade to Seawolf in the 1980s.

A lot of space would be available amidships (listen to me, six months in Plymouth and I sound like a salty seadog!) after the removal of the Walrus/catapult fitments. There must be space for Wasps in the 1960s and Lynx in the late 1970s but what would the role of a battleship be?

I have done an airfix KGV upgrade and looked at Vanguard/Lion (battleship)  upgrades.

The Tiger class cruiser upgrade would be:

Keep the 6" guns
Remove the forward 3" and replace with Seadart or Exocet
Remove the midships 3" and replace with Seacat/Seawolf

I have sketched out several Tiger class upgrades for surface action or anti aircraft use.

p.s. Nice to see a nice ship thread.

I'd keep the 3in in B position, as it was a damn good weapon, certainly pretty useful as a close range AA weapon. I'd replace the after 3in with Lighweight Sea Wolf though, as it could use the same launcher as the Seacat.
The 6 cell GWS25 system is actually quite heavy, IIRC.

If anyone is interested info on the 6in gun and 3in gun can be found here and here.
