The trijet might have pre-empted the 757 well, given that most of the market didn't need all the capability that Boeing built into that airframe. 

Slot in on top of / above the 727 as a ~200 seater, an A321 for the 1980s?  We could call it "Middle of Market" :)

HS Trident and Dassault Mercure shared the same drawback: low range. So, why not external fuel tanks as a "quick and dirty" solution?

What if Iberia managed to get Mercure as a part of the spanish idylle with Marcel Dassault in early 70s.
