Go on, I'm sure I've read about the use of salt somewhere, to help with that "worn paintwork" effect.

I've never done it, but you use course granules, get them wet, and then they stick to your base coat ( usually silver/ aluminium ) so you can paint over them and then pick 'em off and use them on your chips. Try dipping your model in the hot oil for a few seconds for an extra crispy flavour !

First I've ever heard of it, but it makes sense now that I think about it.

And remember to allow the model to drain of hot oil before enjoying!

I've seen Greg use it to great success and I've tried once myself. Just as the Cap'n said, base coat, water and salt. Here's what I did on last years 1 wk build. This was too much salt , by the way. :dum:  :P

I've used PVA glue in a similar way once, I found for tiny patches it took too much paint with it but I think it'd have worked better had I watered it down.

I guess you've seen Gekko's Vegemite technique, but just in case here it is!:

This is technique I haven't used yet but hope too soon, if you want a really grimey model.  Apparently you apply acrylic over an enamel base coat, the dissolve the acrylic using washing powder.  Should be good for armor or RAF desert pink or some such:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Hi Radish,

personally I think its too messy and uncontrollable. I've had REALLY good results with the Vegemite and am about to upload part three of those experiments.

Put the salt back on the table and go to the cupboard and grab the Vegemite!
