I have two Matchbox F-4 Phantoms (thanks Trevor) which have Spey exhausts naturally.

With what can I update them.....no, not new Speys, but other engine exhausts of a similar diameter that could be used.

Ideas, babies??

Since I do not have any 1/72nd scale F-4 kits in protective custody so I am unable to perform any check fit functions myself.

If you hava a couple of spare F-18 kits in 1/48th scale I would take a good look at the F404 exhaust parts from a Hornet and see if they would fill the hole on your 1/72nd scale F-4.  Another option would be the exhaust parts from the 1/48th scale F-20 kits (for the F404 exhaust pieces) and F-5E kits (for the J85 exhaust pieces) and check fit on those parts as well.

The F-18 engines are fine for the J79, but Speys are bigger, so I'll search through the spares box....which, for me in 1/72nd, ain't big.

Years ago, when I was surprisingly organised, I split my 1/72nd stuff into different boxes...exhausts, missiles, fuel tanks, pilots, seats, wheels, etc..
I've now sifted through these and started a new box...F-4 Phantoms.
It'll be essential for all the extras donated to it from made kits, and for donating to other types (like the Kfir) and so on.
In the Italeri A-7 kits there's a good set of underwing jobbies that'll be fitted generously to various Phantoms.

I've got an Airfix 1/72 Tonka GR.4 that I can send you the RB.199's from Rad, should just about fill the space in those holes on the Phantom.  The details crap on them mind.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
