The Jarheads dont really like the fact that they're lumped-in with the Navy 9 times out of 10.

MAD

The Vought (F8U-1) F-8 Crusader.
The last of the gun-fighters that the Marines were most reluctant to loss!

Note - The Marines never wanted the Grumman F-14 Tomcat.
The USMC thought it was to singly-rolled (Interceptor) and technically complicated and maintenance intense.
It was being forced upon it by the navy, so as to increase production and lower production.

On the contrare, the Marine pilots that went to VF-124 were chompin at the bit for theyre new toy and were heartbroken when the corps' F-14s got cut.

QuoteI'm prety sure the USMC flew the A-1 and the F4D-1 as well as the F8U-1/-2 and the FJ-2/-3/-4 series.  Earlier, I know they flew variants of the Corsair well after WW II (where they were the first operational users).
The Jarheads most definitely flew the A-1, the Ford, and the entire Crusader series in great numbers.  The naval infantry (man, do they hate that term!) were the only users of the AU-1 Corsair (other than the French, but we don't like them, so it doesn't count).

Tu sais ce qu'ils te disent les français ???!!!
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

QuoteI've always figured that a USMC Douglas A-26 Invader would be cool, maybe to replace Tigercats in the night interdiction mission, so all over black or midnight blue: Korea, Vietnam or elsewhere. I know that the USN had some Invaders for target towing and designated them appropriately, but for a combat role they'd probably be called DB-3 - as the Navy had a few Boston/Havocs and called them DB-2s (I think).

Anyone made a USMC Invader?
How about the proposed but never built nightfighter version of the basic Douglas Invader design?  That could look quite nice supplementing Tigercat nightfighters.

Actually, for the longest time it was "simply" single-role by act of the US Congress.  The #12 prototype had demonstrated the ability to carry and deliver 12x 500lb dumb bombs but Congress insisted that it be used solely as an interceptor/fighter, not as a "mud mover".  The capability to do more was there all along.

I do know that I've seen the "Marine Tomcat" patch with the F-14 mascot in Marine dress blues.  'Twould be just the thing to put under a model of a USMC Tomcat.

Actually the French got their own version the F4U-7, whereas the AU-1 was the F4U-6. They had differently shaped cowlings and some other stuff but I forget what...
