i was out for a stroll a bit before 0700hrs this morning and watching the planes from my
usual spot about 750 to 1000 yards from the end of the main runway at coventry airport.
a TUI B737 taxies out turns at the end of the runway and holds. he'll be off in a few minutes
i thought so i scanned the sky to see what else there was up. several thousand feet
up and a few miles off was an a/c that looked a bit like an all grey painted A340, so i took a closer look
with the binoculars.

WRONG!

turns out on closer inspection to be a C-17 entering the approach and descending
for finals into birmingham airport. soon as the C-17 is out of the way off goes the
B737.

last week and i forgot to mention this but one of air atlantique's DC6's was airtested
and what a nice sound that was.

its been a good fortnight for spotting already.  B)  and not a  :tornado: or a  :f16: in sight!

Very Bizzare Trev, we only have 4 of 'em and they spend most of their time trolling between here and the sandpit.  Wonder if it was bringing wounded back and dropping them straight off at a civvie hospital?  IIRC it was a hospital in brum where a wounded squaddie got attacked by muslims.

nev and the rat....

this would be the DMC [defence medical centre] at selly oak hospital. this is probably
the principal centre that injured and wounded UK servicemen and women are taken
to when brought back from the middle east, prior to being taken elsewhere for
further treatment.

it is worth pointing out that afaik, most of the old military hospitals like haslar and
ely [and in germany wegberg] have been closed or are closing. a very bad idea i
think. though it might not have prevented that squaddie getting attacked as he
was, it might be a more restful environment for the soldier to have been treated
in a military hospital,  ;) and much more secure.

however, the C-17's can [and have, i have seen one on the tarmac] use coventry
airport. this was late last year and late one friday night.

there is no particular timetable to these flights but i will as this was the second time
that i have seen a C-17 in coventry airspace be taking a camera with me on future
trips to my op.

Back end of last year.  As Trev mentions, we're closing down our military hospitals (cost saving and all that, uh, I mean "increased flexibility"  <_<  ) so our wounded are now being treated in NHS hospitals with all the civvies.  The guy was a para who'd been wounded in Afghanistan, he was lying in a bed, came round to find some muslims haruanging him about making war on their muslim brothers, being a baby killer yadda yadda.  They never physically attacked him (though he said he was concerned they would, and he was in no state to protect himself).

It was front page news on most of the papers, and after that several more squaddies came forward and said they had also been verbally abused whilst in hospital.

And the most disgusting thing about that whole sordid incedent is that NOTHING was done to chastise the dammed mussies that were doing the abusing. Personally, I'd have shot the lot of them

No one and I mean NO ONE has the right to abuse servicemen wounded whilst serving thier country.

My apologies for sounding off and I don't mean to pis anyone off, but this is something I feel VERY strongly about

i'm with you lance.

these people should be british first and muslims second - religion is a personal choice,  a lifestyle, but nationality is not.

wankers.

....on a lighter note, C-17's are delightful, and i enjoy seeing them fly over my house greatly!  Wonderful to see, and hear (when they rattle the windows!)

quite lancer.  <_<

anti discrimination legislation works both ways. yes the groups that don't want discriminating against
can't i would have thought discriminate back. istr, that there are elements of the
muslim/islamic population here who want the laws on blasphemy to apply to them
also here [as i think it does to christians,  jews and other religious groups]. i mean
can you imagine the fuss there would be if say some christians or muslims who were
opposed vehmently to the israeli postion in the mid east, etc tried to demonstrate
in or near or abuse an IDF/army soldier in an israeli hospital,  ;) . yet it seems to be perfectly
acceptable for UK squaddies to get grief from as it has been reported in the media
muslims who live in the UK, etc. double and dodgy standards or what.
