Hello all:

Just as the topic line says, I'd like to know approximately when the RAF stopped putting the aircraft serial code in whopping big size on the underside of the wings on its tactical aircraft.

This is for my RAF Scooter project. I've tentatively placed it in about a 1983 to 1985 timeframe and will be painting it in green/grey wraparound.

For the timeframe I'm aiming at, would I be safe to leave the underwing serials off?

Thanks in advance.

Un-educated guess but IIRC they were still there until the late 80's........

Yeah, definately there at the start of the grey-green wraparound - Buccs & Jags in that scheme for example had underwing codes, very early Tornados as well.

But going from memory, late grey-green Tonkas didn't have them.  So I would say early 80s, keep 'em
