Simply being in service as an airliner is big a 'What-If?'.    

The decision to not pursue the Jetliner ranks as Canada's biggest aviation blunder.  

A radar plane variant ala the C-121 is a possibility, not as a true AWACS though, as by the time that concept came around to physical reality the 102 design would have been long in the tooth and hopefully have been superseded by a newer AVRO(possibly in collaboration with Canadair) transport.

Agree whole-heartedly, a greater blunder than the Arrow. One of my all-time favourite aircraft. I've pestered Hobbycraft a couple of times about doing one but received no response. Just a regular version has massive whiff potential in both civilian and military guises.The obvious ones would of course be Trans Canada Airlines, Canadian Pacific, TWA, and RCAF Transport. A Wardair scheme would be way cool as well.

Agreed!!  That has to be the biggest aviation blunder Canada's government made - it was not a company decision, it was by government order.  Though I understand one problem it had was that some senior government officials had a greater interest in the DC-4M.

Not only was it ahead of the market, but it could operate from the same fields a DC-4 could without building new airports.  This opens up a much greater market than, say, the 707 had.

The biggest stumbling block was a dingleberry named C. D. Howe, the federal Minister of Trade and Commerce. He ordered the project terminated so that Avro could concentrate on turning out CF-100s in case the Korean war dragged on.

Interesting! Why not a big nose radome similar to the AEW Islander / AEW Nimrod ?
the C-102 needed better engines. I remember that at the beginning Avro planned to mount two engines, not four. Two turbofans would be interesting.
The 707/ C-135 lineage give an idea of how many different variants could have been developed.

Maybe Avro could have mounted a Comet nose on the Jetliner, as Sud Aviation did with the Caravelle ?

Interesting comment Jon, I'm just reading a book called CL-44 Swingtail, it's an Air-Britain publication.  In the opening chapters they mention that there were discussions on a stretched North Star (DC-6 maybe) and an AEW version was envisioned but was quickly dropped as Canadair was trying to promote their version of the Britannia, the Yukon.

C-102 was originally schemed with two Avons, but they couldn't get them and, os, went with what they could get.  I wonder how the C-102 would've done with four Orenda engines.  However, even with the engines it had, it's performance was quite outstanding.

I'm not sure that using a Comet nows like the Caravelle would've been necessary for them.  What benefit would it give?

Thanks Terry, and welcome to the board! Hmmm... $60 Cdn eh? I'll need to think about it, after all there's only so much I can slip past the wife and only so many excuses I can use if I do get caught.
