AGI-FME Fluffy J
6944 (Bulgarian) Eskradrille, Comrade Sharkey International Fighter Regiment (Expeditionary), Nanning, PRC, 26 August, 1972 vc UN

When the United Nations invaded Laos and North Vietnam in Operation Half Back Flanker in May 1972, the North Vietnamese conventional forces quickly collapsed back to the Chinese border. When the Chinese Communists went on the offensive in mid-June, their initial gains were beaten back and again UN troops stood intolerably on the land border of the PRC. The only way to reverse this situation was to call on their comrades in the Socialist Union (SU).

The first SU fighters to land in the PRC were a regiment of AGIs (UN codename Fluffy).  These were chosen because, although outdated, they were similar to China's most numerous fighter, the J-6, a licence built version of the AGI. These upgraded Fluffy Js (note the dorsal chaff/flare dispeners and ventral ECM pod) served with distinction in the CAS/BAI role throughout the campaign to drive the UN out of Indo China.

Great story, and love the camouflage, it certainly breaks up the outline!

Got to agree, that cammo is ace and the backstory i8nteresting and plausable. Any chance of expansion?

Hi all,

just some responses to a some of your comments.

The cammo scheme on this was a hazardous affair. I started painting something very Vietnamese Fresco, decided that it was too complex and not working, then went for an all over Chinese style pale grey, then decided that it wasn't going to be a Hunter J-6 at all, but an upgraded Socialist Uinion version, which required another look again.

The stripes came about after a visit to an open plains zoo amd admiring the zebras.

You'll be seeing more about Operation Half Back Flanker in coming weeks. Look out for the RAN's OF-4J Pave Pirate. That's a camo and a half (with lots of ordnance).

As for the seems. Well, i like to model for the overall aesthetic and not for pristine detail. I often leave off antennas and I don't even own sandpaper, so you'll just have to get use to that on my models.

Anyway, thanks for your kind words.

Question

Should I load up the Pave Pirate OF-4J (with night special ops littoral warfare camo   :ar:  ) or the German long-range night attack Meteor   next  ?
