Quoteso tell me more about it thor and amphion, my old muckers, new build carrier in the mid sixties for the swedish navy (improbable i know) - what would it look like? similar to hermes? bit bigger? bearing in mind that it'll be a mainly viggen air wing once we get into the mid 70s, but maybe throw in lansens and maybe tunnans, (if the deck/cat was able maybe drakens), and 105's later on....

i think what i'm asking is, what kit should i get and then mash around to build my carrier....the planes i can play with in 1/72 and 1/144, and they won't break the bank, but at $30 i don't wanna buy the wrong carrier!

Hi Ben

For a new build carrier form the 60's the only thing near is the Heller 1/400 Frence Foch or Clemenceau as all British carriers were originally built during the War just finished off during the 50's & 60's.

If you wanted smaller then you could try and find an Airfix 1/600 Victorious kit as she was rebuilt during the 50's to become a modern Carrier and was sold off & scrapped in 1967 rather quickly after a small mess fire during a refit (a very lame excuse to start cutting back the Carrier fleet ), but could easily have carried on for another 10-20 years.

US carriers were either the rebuilt essex or midway carriers but these have only ever been done in 1/540 scale by Revell. Post war construction has been limited to Super Carriers (too Big for most navies) or the LHD's (You could adapt an LHD by blocking up the dock and constucting an Angled flight deck on one side and building a sponson on the other to allow the island to be moved over and provide a larger deck park.

That's not all bad, but maybe a LHA (comm. in early 70's) as a base. Of course she'll need cats 'n wires and angled flightdeck and sponsoons and stuff.

I know you'd like a big ship but she still have to navigate the Baltic Sea.

And I doubt we'd rely too heavily on french technology, you don't make that mistake too many times. We had a Super Puma go down last night, just off the coast, during exercises. :(

Sorry to hear that amphion  :(

in that case (and because frankly, i doubt that the swedish would buy a french carrier anyway- i'm with you on that one amphion) i'll go with the modified LHA and LHD idea i think....

could be a bit of a caper actually...

think she'll be able to handle my viggens and stuff though?

how about lansens and 105's? tunnans? i'm pretty sure that the drakens are out though...or are they?

didn't i see an idea for a trimaran carrier somewhere thor/amphion? if anybody knows it'll be you two...she'd be rather spry, but a bit modern...

darn...

this what if thing's getting a bit tough....

thanks chaps,

ben

They are a bit slow for carriers, max around 21 knots. I suppose they could be sped up with newer engines.

Now, of course, I'm thinking about this as possibility for other medium-size navies, because it gives you a small CTOL or STOVL carrier plus an LPD in one ship. Extend the hangar full length, and give the ship 5-6 more knots of speed and you'll have the space for a useful airgroup and a reduced but still useful troop complement. Two catapults in the bow, arrestor gear, sponsoned landing deck...

But, you'd have to use an LHD, since the LHA has that elevator right aft. Don't want planes hitting the ramp low flying straight into the hangar!

(JoeP goes wandering off to see what a Revell LHD model costs.)
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

Hi Joe

I was thinking of removing the dockmad extending the flight deck aft, moving the aft centreline lift to a deck edge, possible fwd of the Island. The dock space would be used to fit the additional carrier equipment, store, workshops etc, . i'd keep the marine barracks facilities to allow use as a Helo Carrier with possibly a cargo rampand external sponsons for Landing craft.

sounds fecking marvellous chaps....soooooooooo are we saying that the revell wasp would be ok? (i was looking at that the other day), or do you recommend something else?

sorry for all the questions, but i know about as much about ships as the cheeky girls know about delicately crafted chamber music.

hmmm...
