No hurry, Tophe.  I'm getting back to work after missing over a week and I rather expect this week to be more than a little busy.

Quotewhat information does he have/has he found?  I'd definitely be interested in seeing it, Tophe.
My friend wrote me: <<The source is :  Air International :January 1993. Article: "Fury - the Navy's Sabre" page 44.>>
From my friend Paul, here is the mention of the very special Sabre/Fury FJ-5, from the great magazine Air International. A Sabre (not Super-Sabre?) with the F-107 nose & air intake ? That would be great ! What-if one of us try to build it (in plastic) ? Dear Elmayerle ? :)
[the word "realistic" hurts my heart...]

Actually, Tophe, I've already started gathering the bits I'll need since I do have a couple pics of the FJ-5 display model courtesy of my friend who wrote the Ginter book on the F-107.  It uses a J57 and a plain inlet, ala' F-100 but in the F-107 location< and the wing tips are rounded like most of the NAA-Columbus designs.  The fun part will be blending a vac-form F-107 with a Hasegawa F-100D.

Looking through the Ginter volume on the F-107 I found reference to two versions that I haven't been able to find any more info on:

RF-107A  It was planned to build two of the originally proposed nine protoypes with a recce fit.  It was first proposed to equip the recce version with J67 engines, eventually the decision was made to equip both types with the J75.  I guess the requirement was canned when the RF-105 was cancelled?
F-107B    Air Defence Command liked the F-107 and in March 1957 expressed interest in a fighter version with snap-out rocket pods in place of the 20mm cannon.

No drawings or details I'm afraid, anybody else have any info?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

If drawings or more details on the proposed recce fit surfaced, I would then have to buy one of the Trumpy F-107 kits.

I am looking for a F-107 thread or a model that appeared here back in January of this year. I had saved it but had a crash. Was possibly a two-seater in SEA camouflage.

Gondor

Try looking at the Whiffies for last year or maybe the year before. I am sure it was nominated for one of those years and there should be a link to the build with the nomination.

I know it's in a book I have around here somewhere....

Wasn't it one of JayBee's creations?

Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Yes it was one of Jim's. The link is here http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,23090.0.html unfortunately it was posted so long ago (that scared me I thought it was 2 years at the most ) the way we hold/show pictures has changed and they are no longer there.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Thanks for the answers. I had also checked the thread linked which had been mentioned. The thing might have been from a different site as well.

My view of the F-107 is kind of mixed,

Pro's

  • The F-107 weighed less than the F-105 on similar engine power
  • The F-107's wing-loading was heavy enough for low-altitude, high-speed operation, but was lighter than the F-105's and had a higher aspect-ratio to boot.
  • The F-107's wings had a near full-span flap, which would better affect the lifting characteristics when deflected
.
Con's

  • It had a smaller overall payload to the F-105
  • While I'm pretty sure it would be able to out-turn the F-101, the F-104, and the F-4 for the most part: It would likely lose in a turning-fight against the F-102, F-106, and MiG-21 above 20,000 feet, and against the F-8 (except possibly) below 10,000-15,000 feet to max-q.
  • The aircraft would be defeated on the vertical by the F-104, and F-4, possibly the F-101B.
  • The design represented much of the problems that the USAF's philosophy on tactical bombers: They either bloated them up into medium-bombers, or used fighter-bombers.
That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.
