lancaster soot marks

You see a lot of Lancasters with heavy soot marks on the wings, my question is.......how long does it take foe an aircraft to look like this ? Is it a feature of the older wwII paints or would it stain more modern paints so ?

Not sure how long it would take to get that way (not to long I would have thought) and modern paints might be easier to clean but would still tend to get dirty I would have thought.

I've read that the exhaust stains are the result of using high octane fuel

Not bad at all, one observation though, the outer stubs of the outer nacelles don't usually leave a stain on the top of the wing as the exhaust goes under the wing, see here:
