Give them a common Airbus style fuselage, so the two engined short haul, three engined medium haul and four engined long haul airliners all using common components. The BAC-111 and Trident use the common Spey (or Medway allowing slightly larger capacity and range?), and would have nearly identical cockpits, much like the A320 series nowadays. Even the larger VC-10 could have used a similar cockpit design, and common components, hopefully cutting costs a bit, and making training easier. Though the designs belonged to different companies, there could have been a high degree of cooperation, especially since the aircraft are not in direct competition (three very different designs, with different capacities and ranges).
