Goodness, Stoneleigh!
That dredges the memories!!
It's amazing to remember that the competition at the Nats then (about the same size as now) FILLED the main hall, traders around it, and a few SIGS and Branches in a small hall off. Later it took up every available space and even used a marquee for additional room. The current SMW is many times bigger, many times! I reckon the Nats at Stoneleigh was about the size of the Hinckley Show?

Two that spring instantly to mind

1)  Mid 80s when the Hasegawa 1/72 Jaguar came out, my dad brought one back for me from a business trip.  Being still a pocket money modeller then, Hasegawa was like manna from heaven to me.  I go stuck into it before I had to leave to go to my mums for the weekend, and could see that it needed nose weight.  Having nothing else to hand, I decided to try and use Maskol (!) which I merrily poured into the nose, stuck it on and left for my mums.  When I came back on Sunday, my Jaguar had a decidely wrinkled nose!

2)  Building the Revell 1/72 Hunter F.6 when it first came out, I was doing it in the 12 squadron wraparound.  I had got to the point where I was painting on the wraparound camo and was checking the instructions for where the demarcation line went when I noticed NO SABRINAS!!!!  :banghead: I of course had built them on without even thinking.  Luckily Lee saved my sanity by suggesting I paint it as a Black Arrows bird.  One spray can of Halfords Gloss Black later and the model was rescued.

Sales of Airfix kits plummeted in the 1980s, and GCSEs had to be made easier as a result - James May

I always screw up something on my models. I just have fun and try not to take myself too seriously so mistakes aren't always a big deal.

However... the worst for me was getting a contract shortly after the movie Titanic came out. I landed a deal to build 5 of the big academy kits with photo etch and internal lighting gear to be provided by the client. Ordered the kits and brass and had it in less than a week. Production line build, no problemo. The kits wet together like a charm, considering. I had done a contract earlier for 20 Revel Titanic kits. (Still in therapy for that one) The Academy kits all went together in less than 10 days and looked great.

Anyhow, I was at a local box company to get shipping boxes for these things and my cell rang. The guy building the light systems had finally finished building them and wanted to know if I could pick them up so that I could build the ships. I totally forgot the lights.

Back in the early days I did lots like glue the wrong tailplane halves, or wheel halves together, but yours, Gary, is really impressive...and what a build!! Certainly more Titanics than you can shake a stick at.
Italeri "encouraged" me to build a Rafale incorrectly once by putting CH-53 instructions in the box :banghead:

How far did you get into the assembly before you figured that one out?

We don't just embrace insanity here.  We feel it up, french kiss it and then buy it a drink.

I once did a He162 up, painted and all and only noticed on the way to show it that the wings were on back the front!!!  But it looked right at the time... :banghead:
