Does anyone out there know if the good old Soviet Union used any sort of winter cammo on their aircraft ?

I`m sort of leaning towards a white wash finish but would like to see what others think, its for an aircraft i`m putting together for a 60s Spitzbergan campaign.

I realise that everything looks good with RED STARS on it`s wings but thought winter cammo would look nice . ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for looking comrades

DM,

Whilst I'm unaware of 'winter camo' for their post war aircraft, there's quite a diversity for their aircraft from the Great Patriotic War, ranging from overall white uppers to white segements on tactical camo.  The latter are my personal favourite.

Sadly, they pretty much stopped using winter camouflage before the end of the Great Patriotic War, once they had air superiority. I've never seen it used post war. However, that didn't stop me building a winter camouflaged Su-17  which you can see at www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,18363.0.html

I would recommend the following web page that was created by Matt Bittner and Erik Pilawskii: Modeling the Aircraft of the Soviet VVS (http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/)

There are some interesting references provided for camouflage schemes of the VVS during the Great Patriotic War.

You beat me to it, Jeff.

MiG-3s were sometimes factory finished in WHITE all over, including u/c legs, propellor blades too.

And if you're looking for all-white aircraft to model, check out the Chinese Air Force/Navy.
