Now that does look sweet! And a bread bag clip? Man, I'd never have thought of that, even when totally strapped for cash and out of plasticard...

They work great! They can be cut easily with a knife or nail clippers, they scribe easily, take paints well, polystyrene cement or superglue works on them, and they're FREE with each bag of bread or hamburger buns! The pita bread my wife buys usually has extra-large ones for even more cheap fun. Another good source of plastic is coffee cup lids, or the ones you get on cold drinks from a fast food stand. They have the added advantage of being flexible for making all sorts of parts.

Since that pic I've got the balsa stuck on the bottom with Testors shaping putty, should start the carving/sanding/puttying/swearing stage tonight.

Ah yes, the ol'  "CSPS" stage....   ;D

Superb, Dave, superb! It looks so right! Almost like the Beriev Albatross with those shoulder-mounted engines. Woowoo

After a serious delay caused by various factors (summer fun, overconsumption of beer, work, general doldrums, etc.) this project is now nearing completion. All the gluing is probably done, just some final shaping and smoothing before painting and decalling.

The hemp paint was simply applied to find surface flaws that's why it's very patchy.

The wing floats are carved from bombs that came with one of the ugliest models ever produced - the old Aurora Spitfire from the 50s or 60s.

That anhedral looks the part!

Had a right bugger of a time carving the hull, it just seemed to get worse each time I tried to fix it. It's now smooth enough that I'm going to simply slather the paint on and hope for the best, or put it down to rough landings in heavy seas.

Decals have been procured from Toad again (The Pomerleau Hobby Shop for Incorrigible Scroungers), and this should hopefully be wrapped up soon.

It's great to see you back to work on this beauty, Rat-San! You've got a real talent for flying boats and planing hulls. This one is so convincing it goes from What-If to "Should've Been"! Makes me think of a jet-powered competitor for the famous China Clipper!

OOOO! Niftolicious!
The AeroTort (the national San Tortan airline) may need to get in touch with you for a jet liner fleet...

Rat,

The model is awesome!  It makes me want to tackle something floaty in the near future.

Anyway, I spotted this photo on airliners.net last weekend, and this thread seems as appropriate a place as any.  A couple of weeks ago, the Gelendzhik hydroport outside Moscow hosted "Gidroaviasalon 2008" and the big stars were Russian flying boats and WIG planes.

There are two Be-103s in the shot, including one on final, near the center.  The big jets are an A-42 Albatross and a pair of Be-200Chs waterbombers.  The little high-winged job in the right corner is an Aerovolga LA-8, which I had never seen nor heard of before I saw this photo.  I thought the photo might serve as inspiration for some of us.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled model drooling.

That's the little detail that really makes that shot for me, seeing an aircraft flying low over a bunch on the ground just makes the picture very 'busy', just the way an airport should be! I almost feel like Photoshopping a Rayador into that scene:

Watch out for that dihedral then, it's just ridiculous. Could be fixed I guess by cutting the roots partway through and bending them down, but getting it just right would be difficult I think. Best to whif it with some sort of backstory explanation for the strange appearance.
