Here is (found on the Web at http://www.flickr.com/photos/cutangus/6316...in/set-1342917/ ) a twin-boom design dated 1945 (or 1996...):

Many other twin-boomers are featured, like UAV versions of P-61.

The Lake Patent US 1,890,059 (see http://v3.espacenet.com/textdraw?DB=EPODOC...0&QPN=US1890059  ) was dated 1931 but later we may imagine such Lightnings: from my old pusher P-38P, I have drawn a tractor P-38Q  , and of course the push-pull derivative P-38PQ   (in French, PQ means toilet-paper... :( ):

The P-47Z:
Twin-boom long range fighter, designed to escort B-29Zs from Iceland to Berlin, and back.

The Il-2 Shturmovic was a very tough aircraft. A twin would be twice as tough ;D :o
Note the forward pointed gunner in one of the fuselages:

In the late 1990s the AVRO Regional Jet was dying. It was uneconomic, and didnt sell any more. As a result BAe tryied making a 2 engined version valled the BAe 146 RJ120. It didnt sell. The reason was clear, it should have been a twin!
