DIY Display Cabinets

Are there any plans in the 'net for simple, simple, simple, closed display cabinets?

I said simple. I'm no furniture maker, and am trying to do it myself after the shocking prices quoted by four (yes, four) different %(%(%?=%·% carpenters/woodworkers.

I said closed (glass?) because of the need to avoid dust collecting on my stuff.

There are no IKEA stores or the likes in these latitudes.

Thanks beforehand,

Rafa

Rafa, if you Google your title you'll find plenty of sites with instructions on how to build cabinets, here's one with several glass fronted cabinet designs:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Wonder what the delivery cost would be for Ikea to Brazil  ;D

Rafa,
Too bad you don't have an Ikea nearby. I got two of these glass display towers and they were inexpensive and a breeze to assemble. It's a very simple design as well.

The shelf spacing is not adjustable, though. I designed some clear Lucite stands to display more models... and was shocked at the quoted prices just for cut Lucite. I found that Lucite store display stands are fairly cheap, so that problem is solved, but if you design your own display case, make sure that your shelf height is adjustable!

If you can go for plexiglass or acrylic instead of regular plate glass (like the stuff in pictureframes), Not as easily broken ;)

Isnt Rafa in Venezuela though... At least it would probably be harder to do so, due to current politics... :banghead: (theres recently been troubles with the US gov. freezing money between Denmark and Pakistan, so how about Venezuela?!?)

Rafa, una solución simple, y puede que barata, es comprar muebles para médicos. Ya sabes esas vitrinas con estructura metálica en las ellos suelen guardar el instrumental.

Thanks for your ideas, gents, I'll start exploring options, maybe a Cardboard (Yum!!!) cabinet?

As for acrylics, I think I can check some places here, Shas. But does not acrylic fog or crack with time?

Carlos, medical furniture is expensive here, I know they are not more than cheap metal things, but medics being such an exclusive crowd here, have to pay lot more than their real value.

Frank, that tower is ideal. Maybe in acrylic.....

Thomas, yes, I'm in Venezuela. You know, I'd rather be there sailing with you......And yes, getting foreign hard currency here is a very tortuous and complicated process.

Thanks

Rafa, acrylic/plexiglass (since it's an oil product) may actually be more expensive than glass or safety glass sheets. OTOH, you are in Venezuela, so maybe acrylic is cheaper down there. How about store merchandise displays, like for watches or other small jewelry? If you can find a jeweler or department store going out of business, you may find one cheap.

Lol, Denmark is a cold cold place, with lots of rain, clouds, useless police, useless politicians, lots of German turists, and our tax system is the only thing keeping Greenland and the Faeroe islands afloat...;D And the beaches are no good either, the Germans left a mess, when they last came up to play, sometime in the 1940s... (the bloody bunkers are indestructable! Perhaps Venezuela wants a few to play with?). Also, when the AF is to buy new aircraft, the talk is not whether it should be one type or another, but also "if" we should buy new fighters ;D

That said, id recommend you to look for closed down jewelers or department stores. I suppose there might be a few, over the next few months, considering the global credit crunch.

Rafael

Yeah, Thomas, but still.....

And Frank, businesses closing are the norm here. Maybe I missed the first wave, when I had to close up shop, and couldn't buy cheap furnitures. But is a very valid idea, I'll hunt for them. And regarding acrylic, I have no references, but I know some places close to home that deal in plastics, maybe I'm in for a surprise, thanks for reminding me. I'm not sure about them plastics being cheap, since the trick here is with POL (Petroleoum, Oil and Lubricants). I remember posting somewhere in this forum about the price of gas in Venezuela, which is heavily subsidized by the govt, at a resulting price of 1 Liter = 0.04 US$ / 1 US Gal.= roughly 0.16 US$.

Thanks for your ideas. Sometimes the trees don't let me see the forest....
