Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation CAC CA-23 Help Needed

In 1948 the most ambitious and technologically advanced aeronautical design project yet undertaken in Australia was commenced by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC). This project was the CA-23, twin-seat, all-weather fighter.

This unusual design was a delta wing with a low set tail and originally planned to be powered by 2 RR RB 44 Tay engines, although the final design replaced the Tays with RR Avons.Its anticipated performance was in the region of Mach 1.5.

A mock up model was made and wind tunnel tested, but sadly the design made it no further and the aircraft the RAAF got was instead the Avon Sabre.

I have some very basic GA drawings of the project, but was wondering if anyone had more detailed plans from which a model could be constructed.

Funnily enough, I did profiles of Panthers & Cougars in RAAF markings some time ago... Serendipity I guess.

That is a 1948 project? Ambitious. It would've been nice to see that one flying. The Grumman Panther looks like an interesting start for a project, too.

Uncle Les Resins did the CAC CA-23 last year and may be available from Southern Sky Models.

Its a limited run resin kit complete with decals, but as far as i can tell the model appears to be somewhat under scale. Either the model was incorrectly scaled up when the master was created or Uncle Les is in receipt of more acurrate data than the information published so far.

Could do with GTX talking to the guy writing the multi-volume work on the Asutralian Aviation Industry to see whats available on the CA-23.

I know you asked for plans, but maybe these pictures of the models & mock ups may help?

I'm fairly sure I downloaded these from this site & I think it was Greg (GTX) that provided them. There's a good chance he'll have more material, but he's away for a while so it might be worth PM'ing him.

Will see what I can do, but Keith Meggs is fairly tied up getting the first 2 volumes ready for print right now.
