During the mid-1950s it became obvious to the RAF that they lacked anything capable of intercepting Soviet bombers far out over the North Sea, before they got within range for a missile launch against the UK. With existing and planned homegrown fighters either too slow, or too short ranged, this left a dangerous gap in the defence of the UK. Avro came up with a proposal to meet the challenge, with a lightly modified CF-100 Mk5. Armed with four Fireflash missiles the Clunk was able to intercept hostile aircraft well out over the sea. It was finally withdrawn from frontline service in 1968, having been supplanted by another Avro Canada product, the Arrow.

Nice! Always had a soft spot for the Clunk. Not the most beautiful of aircraft but bloody imposing when you walk up to one on the ground.

So I take it, being camoflaged, that she's an RAF Germany Clunk. Home defnce would of course be BMF or high speed silver.

(A Clunk in high speed silver, I feel so dirty for even thinking something so pornographic!)

Again really good stuff, thanks for sharing.

Hmmmm....isn't there a really huge underbelly gun pack missing, or I guess this is assuming the Brits wouldn't care much for guns?
It's a crappy self-made pic of a Lockheed Unmanned Combat Armed Rotorcraft (UCAR), BTW

The Mk.5 didn't have the guns.

Beauty ! Love the camo and the markings. I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've seen a British Clunker.
