Mako is one of my favourite aircraft!!!

http://www.whatifmodelers.com/forum/upload...-1176377221.jpg

Always thought that the Mako could have replaced no less than 3 french aircrafts

- Alphajet (including the Patrouille de France )
- Jaguar as a low-cost "African" CAS platform (in Djibouti)
- Mirage 2000 as a cheap Rafale complement for foreign countries.

So a single-seat Mako would be my entry here  ;)

I really want to build one butchering Italeri X-35, sadly I can't find this damned kit (even in Paris !!! )

Another  idea turning in my head is the Thundermirage. Nils probably know what I mean  ;)
I've discovered that the FAB had changed old F-84Fs into Mirage decoys, by adding wooden wings, intakes and nose cone to Thunderstreaks.
This gave me ideas, whatif SABCA had build a cheap fighter bomber in the 60's, using F-84F and Mirage V spares ?

King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Archie, is this the kit you're looking for?

Spey_Phantom

@ archibald, yes i know what you mean.

when the F-84's were withdrawn from service, the airforce converted some F-84F's into the socalled Thundermirage aircraft using parts from the F-84 and crashed Mirage 5 fighters. the aircraft never flew because they were build as decoys during the cold war to confuse russian spyplanes, they were placed on the "Pampa range" (belgiums live firing range) and were used as ground targets

on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

Im new here, but i have a design of a future concept of what an f-18 might look like if it were built into a real fighter, but wait i also designed 2 versions for the airfroce. I like to create my own designs other projects in the work's are a redesign of the russian flanker, mig-29, both not even close to the original designs. Getting back to my concept i built a prototype of one airforce version.

I was thinking that completley modular air frame sections would be the answer, so that the aircraft could specced according to needs and budget.  This would make it very simple to upgrade too.
Question is, has this been done before?

Hobbes

Not really, I think. There has been the Lightning prototype with swappable wings, but otherwise it's limited to engines and avionics.

The BAe P.1239 SABA had a modular pack in the dorsal fuselage.  This could contain weapons, radar, or electronic gubbins to suit the mission.  The Soviet design bureau NIAI had built at least two aircraft types in the 30's were the wing area was variable, it would telescope out from the fuselage.  Not quite modular, but mission adapatable at least.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Just a thought, if we are thinking of ressurecting 2 and 3G airframes for low budget nations, would the Mig 23 / 27 family be an option? From what little I remember there are a stack of them floating (?) around 3rd world airforces, they have large internal volumes and could be re-engineered up or down. I.e. you could simplify and lighten by dumping the swing wing and swinging lower fin, popping in an engine / intake arrangement optimised for Mach 1.6 or thereabouts, loadign it with smaller volume electronics and glass cockpit and off you go, an FA18 style swing fighter . . . OR you could refine the swing wing, beef up the engine (or add a second) and the avionics, install a bubble canopy and optimise for air to air.

And thinking of it, what about all the Mig 21bis's out there . . .
Going to be finished in 2021 BEFORE I start any da*!#d new ones - CF-IDS Wolverine; Douglas Mawson; Bubba Wants a Fishin' Rig; NA F-100

Against the Wall - Maton Dreadnought; Fender Telecaster; Epiphone Les Paul Studio
