Figures question

Does anybody know where I can get some 1960s British Infantry figures, that is to say armed with Sterlings, SLRs, GPMGs etc..? Berets and shorts would be ideal, but not essential. I presume that an old enough "modern" set would do the trick, but such things never seem to come up on ebay............

Is this for a 1/35th scale project?  

Here are some sources for 1/35th scale:

GPMG/MAG-58 is available in the Tamiya "Pink Panther" SAS Land Rover and Italeri Commando Land Rover.  Two weapons in each kit.

Sterling, FAL, and Browning P-35 pistol are available in the Italeri Modern Weapons set.  You get several of each subject and they have some good details.  

FAL and Sterling were also included in a Vietnam War weapons set from DML/Dragon.  Expensive and only one of each provided.  

1960's era figures could be sourced from the Tamiya Land Rover Ambulance (two litter bearers with long trousers and one wounded figure for the litter).  There are several figures with shorts in the Tamiya LRDG Jeep and Truck kits (WWII era which could be modified to update them).  The Tamiya "Pink Panther" SAS Land Rover also has a figure provided with the beret and long trousers.  Other options include the tank commander figures in the Chieftain and Centurion plus the Churchill if you expand your search.

I remember Airfix used to produce a 1/32nd scale soft plastic figure set of troops that were from that period as well.  The same line of figures also had some SAS figures molded in soft black plastic.

As British shorts haven't changed that much you could you some 8th Army figures or the crew from the Tamiya 25dr gun and fit some heads by Hornet

Tamiya do a seperate set of litter bearers with a sergeant figure too

8th Army set will have shorts/socks but they will need some shortening, and the webbing will need a bit of modernising, or deleating. Sort of depends on which war and when.

To clarify, the Dragon 'Vietnam War' weapons set has two of each of the following:

L1A1 (quite distinct from the FAL)
L34A1 (silenced Sterling)
F1 (Aussie SMG that was complete poo-poo (with an english accent)).

The Italeri SLRs are woefully underscale, especially compared to the Dragon offerings, whilst their Stirlings are acceptable.

The Dragon "Modern Support Weapons" set also features FN-MAG x 2, although there would be changes necessary to mod them to L7 GPMG standard.  A single sprue of this set is also in their 'Modern US Marines' kit.

Sorry, I forgot the scale - 1/76th or 1/72nd, please.

I'd suggest having a look at Wargames minis - 25mm scale is pretty damn close to 1/72 and there are a lot of minis out there. They'll be metal and the weapons may be a little overscale (cause they break if you make 'em realistic!). I can't think of anyone off the top of my head which would do what you want, but I'm sure someone does.

Not sure what is out there in the soft figure range but I feel 20mm wargame figures are a little closer to 72nd.  There are several companies that make some decent looking blokes, SHQ and AB come to mind but I think AB has mostly WWII.

You could try Eureka in melbourne - they do some of thier own stuf as well as acting as Australian agents for various people. And if you can get there during thier bizzare opening hours they'll let you rummage through thier parts draws until you find what you want - even if it's just the backpack which comes with a steam driven power suit!

Might be a tad far to go from Stockport, Cheshire whatever their opening hours, but I'll have a look at their website - cheers!

Couldn`t find them on the Hannants site but back in the days when I did 1:72 someone made a set of `guards` dog handlers patrol men with SLR`s people in NBC suits etc. Poss`Airfix M.Box or Italeri/Revell
